NEW YORK, Aug. 19 A remarkable
demonstration of strength in rails,
more than a score of which broke thru
to new high prices for the year, on
gains averaging one to two and one
half points, featured today's half holi
day session of the stock market. The
bullish demonstration threw a scare
into the shorts who hastened to cover,
adding momentum to the upward
swing.
Transactions In Industrials and
specialties wore on n more limited
basis but the strength In rails caused
United States Steel common to move
to its highest price of the year and
pushed Baldwin and American Car and
Foundry up to new high records.
Equipments, high paid domestic oils.
rubber, textile and food shares partici
pated in the upward movement. Gains
f two points or more were made by
Union Pacific, Chicago and Eastern
Illinois and St. Paul preferred.
General Electric and Cluett-Peabody,
each at peak prices, were the Individ
ual strong points in the industrial list.
The closing was strong. Sales approx
imated 425,000 shares.
