EXC'ELLKXT doctrine. J'ttt why take the tronlile of informing
yourself, why use your intelligence, when, to quote further in
this eloquent address "every Itepulilican should vote the ticket
.straight" from 'Governor to dog catcher. - ,
What is the hig idea. Voting the ticket straight, means using no
intelligence whatever. It means taking no time lit all. It means
seeking no information. It means only taking enough interest to dis
tinguish the parly emblem and draw down a sawed off pencil beneath
1.
Of course, it is a familiar idea. We have ho quarrel with Mr.
Tooze for advancing it. If, as state chairman, he didn't advance it,
he would promptly lie kicked into the middle of next week.
Hut what we don't understand is joining this time-honored adju
ration with the appeal to take n more active interest in polities, to use
one's head, to vole only after being intelligently informed. This looks
lo us like a waste of words and time. The citizen who "votes 'er
straight" lets the parly organization or flu; happenchance of the pri
mary do all his thinking for him.
,
. There is another feature of the state chairman's policy which we
do not endorse. We think he might well hold to the "vote-'er-i-traight"
doctrine find still not dub the independent voter "half
baked and unprincipled."
There have been some pretty good independents in American
polities. Roosevelt was one. Franklin K. Lane was another. In any
community there are scores of less prominence, of course, but of
t'l md integrity.
. Why call them names? For such men, who in limes of stress, have
followed what they believed to be right, rather than what they knew
to be regular, who have placed principle above parly, are the stuff
out of which much of the greatness of this country has been made.
Let them live. They may represent a minority, but a minority
which is very useful in the advancement of our Dcriuic racy.

AH, WHERE?
OH, W1IKRK is the author of ten years since, whose works
we hailed with a loud hurroo) Reviewers said, "Now
another prince of dazzling genius comes into view." For a little
while, in its gaudy tints, his halo rattled us humble dubs; wo saw
his name in the public prints, and he was strong at the Woman's
Clubs, lie talked of Art as his fame arose, and looked like Booth
on a one-night stand, was photographed in a queenly pose, his
chin at rest on a lily hand. Ah, where, oh, where is that author
now, and where the books that he deigned to write! And where
I'll see men blowing their ehiekenfeeil for helpful volumes by
is the wreath on the bulging brow, and the Hall Caine beard and
the ringlets bright! I've sprung this query on every chump, and
harsh ami changeless the answer rings: "f!o ask the keeper
who guards the dump, the seneschal of forgotten things." New
genius comes with the glowing dawn, and night beholds it a
shattered wreck; but olI Nick Carter goes marching on, and
Laura Libbey is still on deck. And evermore as I go my way,
Bertha Clay and soulful stories by Myrtle lteed. Oh, now ami
then let a dirge be sutrg for the golden genius that failed to
thrive; we cannot say why the good die young, we cannot tell why
the freaks survive.
