' COMMUNICATIONS
C. M. Thomas and the K. K. K.
To the Editor: I have been readlnK
the articles In your paper in record to
the K. K. K. and especially the com
munications concerning C. M. Tlininut)'
position as to the Klan. Of course, It
Is understood, that a cundldate (or
Judge, especially with a number of
Individuals indicted In connection with
alleged Klan affairs, and with the
almost certainty, if elected, of being
called on to preside in those cases,
cannot express his opinion, either for
or agalnBt the Klan, However, It is
apparent, that there are certain purties
seeking to tako advantage of Mr.
Thomas' position and writing to the
Mall Tribune for the purpose of put
ting Mr. Thomas in a false light, know
ing that he cannot get in a newspaper
controversy without disqualifying him
self for the high position he seeks.
In view of this, it is the duty of Mr.
Thomas' friends to see that he receives
fair play.
As a member of the Legion, I had
charge of the memorial exercises at
Ashland, May 30th this year. It was
the wish or both the G. A. R. nnd
Legion that Senntnr Thomas make the
address. He did so. I hnve novel
heard a moro nblo, pntrlotlc and Inspir
ing speech. Ills theme was along the
line of the necessity of teaching re
spect for the law, and strict enforce
ment of every law; that the law was
the foundation of the government, and
was the Instrument through which our
lives and property are protected. No
one who heard that Bpeoch could for
one moment imnglne Judge Thomas
sympathizing with any organization
practicing criminal acts, let alone be
ing a member of such an organization.
Mr. Colvlg and his associates will not
succeed In making many people In
Jackson county bollovo that.

HALL QUITS AGAIN.
THE HALL- recount lias been abandoned entirely, recount,
charges, tlie entire nyi'in'M-oIe of el;ii-lrap and i'lulj-dtil) lias
been t In-own out on the si.sli lieiip when: il belonged in the first place.
Of course the law and the courts are to blame. So says the Hall
publicity bureau. Laws and the courts are such, inconvenient things
in the Invisible realm of hocus pocus. So arc coiislitutions, state and
federal.
' How nice it will be when law nnd the courts and the constitutions
are all invisible, when the avera-re citizen, uninitiated in the Klavor
nistic mysteries, can see nothing about him, to protect him, in his life,
his liberty and the pursuit of happiness, but ghosts, wraiths, goblins,
d'enii, (irand Dragons, Hydras, Cyclops, Terrors and Furies, myti
1'ying, terrifying figures!
Won't life be perfectly lovely, then? Some good citizens think
to, particularly the good politicians. These genii and dragons are
such efficient precinct heelers. "What a shame if they didn't climb on
the band wagon. And they make so little noise nnd take up so little
room. Oh, it's a great life, a great life, in the Invisible Kingdom.
And there will be invisible lawyers, too. No more lawyers like
jUr. W. S. U'JJen, representing the Hall cohorts. He was never born
on the "Dreadful Hay of the Weeping "Week of the Mournful
Month." For he bluntly admitted iu open court hV had been misin
formed. AVhat had been told him as facts were not facts. Some
body lied.
Ilorror-ilile ! It is very nice to be invisible yourself, particularly
when you are an amateur detitetive, but to find that your evidence
too is invisible! How annoying. I'articularly when you supposed
your informant knew everything, saw everything, and bawled out
every time the gavel fell "lieware ! Beware,!"
Mr. U'Ren will have to look up a new job. So will a lot of other
poor unfortunates who haven't the all-seeing eye, protected by the
headgear of a circus horse. That is, unless such things as the law,
the judges, the courts and the constitution, are made visible in Ore
gon again, by the coming election.

HOMESICKNESS.
SOMK day, to soothe my homesick soul, I'll go to Punktown-in-the-1
lole, the town where I was born; by uight I dream of
I'unktown friends, and when the happy vison ends I wake, dis
tressed, forlorn. I yearn once more to walk around the l'unk
towirsquare, and see the pound, the courthouse anil tho jail; to
see the chums of long ago, before myiead was crowned with snow
and I grew bent and frail. Stern Reason says, " 'twill make you
sad to visit now your native grad, it's changed since days of yore;
the girls you knew when you were young are faded dames, their
withers wrung, life's burdens made them sore. Ttie boys you knew
are toothless guys who tell old tales and swat tin' flies, and they've
forgotten you; the town js worn by wind and rain, and you will
look around in vain for landmarks that you knew.'.' I know that
Kenson speaks the truth, I know the Village of my youth would
surely break my heart ; but every morning when I wake, I say,
"That trip I'll have to take when had I better start?" And
some fine day I'lHoad my ear nnd journey to that burg afar, nnd
walk among the tombs, and. see the courthouse and the jail, the
withered crones and gaffers frail who once were brides nnd
grooms.

Motion Picture Producers Are Xot so Much Interested
in the- Millions of Dollars Invested in the, -,
Industry, as They Arc in Morals and
Education of Children, Says Ilavs.
In an eloquent and forceful ap
peal to the nubile to have faifc in
motion pictures, Will H. Hays, head
of the Motion Picture Producers'
and Distributors' Association, as
Lhe guest of the Los Angeles Cham
ber of Commerce at their weekly
luncheon at the Alexandria Hotel,
said that the evils, if any, now ex
isting in Hollywood shall bo elim
inated. He declared that the one
bad influence in the film colony is
talk.
"For the life of me, I cannot Bee
the horroH of Hollywood." said Mr.
Hays. "We must- remove the lies
about the 'ndustry. Ours Is a duty
to youth. We are not so much in
tnrested in the millions of dollars
Invested in the industry, as we aro
in the millions of children whoso
morals and education are invested
in it.
"I earnestly nsk and hope to re
ceive the advice and cooperation of
the public. One way for the public
to help us make good pictures is
very easy, and that is to Buppori .
gcod pictures." .
During Mr. Hays' tour of the
Hollywood colony, he visited the
Warner Brothers studios. Here ho
met Freckle-faced Wesley Barry,
who stonped work on his latest
Harry Rapf production, "Rags to
Riches," to shaVe hands with the
Judge Lundis hi the screen.
