rather sleepy until the Pacific highway
was graded and paved through . the
town, Is now perking up. In the old
days the "morning's morning" was an

man was entitled to get a drink of
whiskey free in the morning if he
called while the bartender was clean
ing up and had not donned his apron.
While the drink, in the circumstances,

Five bidders contested Wednesday
for the award of the contract for the
construction, of the main canal of the
Grants Pass Irrigation project, when
the bonrd of directors of the district
received proposals. Pat W'eJch, . who
recently completed canals for the Med
ford district was awarded the contract
with a bid of more than .30,000 less
thnii his nearest competitor. The ex
cavation ot 180,000 cubic yards is in
volved. The bid was $73,680.
