BAR PISTOLS IS
LAWYERS' ADVICE
SAN FRANCISCO, Aug. 10 (By As
sociated Press). Declaring that the
pistol "serves no useful purpose in the
community today," the committee on
law enforcement Included in its recom
mendations submitted to the American
Bar association one for the prohibition
of the manufacture and sale of pistols
and of cartridges and ammunition de
signed to be used in them "save as
such manufacture may be necessary
for governmental and official use
under proper regulations and control."
"We find that more than 90 per cent
of the crimes In this country are com
mitted by the use of pistols," contin
ued the report of the committee of
which Judge William B. Swaney of
Chattanooga, Tenn., was chairman.
We find that the laws prohibiting the
carrying of firearms or deadly weapons
are ineffective in fact, that they work
to the benefit of the criminal rather
than the law abiding citizen."
PASADENA, Cal., Aug. 10. W. R.
Bean, who arrived here yesterday from
Carnegie, Pa., today shot and killed his
wife, Aliene, and then committed sui
cide, leaving several notes of explana
tion. The two bodies were found in
a locked bathroom in the home of Mrs.
Bean's sister. The two left four small
children.
Today Bean ate breakfast with his
wife, the children and Mr. and Mrs.
Reginald Warren, Mrs. Warren being
the sister at whose home the Beans
were staying. After breakfast Bean
got his wife into the bathroom in some
way. The Warrens heard shots and
forcing an entrance found the bodies
and letters.
The four orphaned children range in
age from 4 to 13 years.
The letters left by Bean assigned
marital troubles as the reason for the
act. ,

. Kid Pickles, one of Medford's clever
est mitt exponents, will meet Billy
Sales of Eugene, In the semi-windup

be a good scrap since both boys are in
the pink of condition and rarin' to go,
As preliminary events. Sonny Austin
win box Joe Harrell at 110 pounds
Chauncejr Hooker will mix with Mark
Smith at 120 pounds, and there will be
other bouts.

ST. LOUIS MAN HAS NO
LUCK "BULLING" BULL
-
By International News Service)
ST. LOUIS, Mo., Aug. 10. You
can't bull" the bull.
Take it from Edward Lueke,
who seized a club and drove a
bull from his garden. Lueke pur-
sued the invader until he reached 4
the street, whereupon the bull
wheeled on his haunches and
started after his erstwhile pur-
suer. 1
Lueke dove through a barbed-
wire fence with sartorial disaster,
the maddened bull uncomfortably
in the rear. Lueke scaled a tree,
where he remained until the bull
was lassoed by a neighbor.
