crews at work In the community.
While some of the farmers are stack
ing their grain, many are threshing

home near Phoenix.
Mrs. Robert Brophy and Miss Leah
Parker attended the large picnic on
the Applegate Sunday.
Tho Willow Springs Girls' Sewing
club met this week on Wednesday
nftornoon, with Miss Anna Wolff
The club is well advanced with their
work and will make a fine showing
in the exhibit at the county fair In
the fall.

who are camping at Diamond Lake.

I have been fain 11 In r with every foot
of land south of Talent since my early
childhood, and I am able to see what
irrigation lias done for the poorer soil
It has literally transformed acres and
acres of It. There are fine gardens
growing on some ot the land where til
hardpan Is only six inches below th
surruce of the land. Airaliu fields
where only foxtail and thistles used to
grow. In my girlhood days all the land
adjoining the Williams place, was only
a dry wuste after the grain crop was
cut, and the grain crop was usually a
very light one. All of the lund on tho
east Bide of Wagner creek, Just south
of Talent was owned at that time by
Jim Helms. Now there are eight homes
on that same land, this making all the
inhabitants more than a good living.
Water has been the important factor
in making all that land productive.
Water makes the green fields where
the dry stubble used to be. It may cost
to have water, but It pays hi the end
When the great canal east of Ashland
is finished there will be plenty o
water the entire season for every far
mer who Is under the ditch.

He tells me that Mr. and Mrs. Merrill

Los Angolos, are camping In the park

to Medford to procure supplies for
their house, in the way of soft drinks,
candies and cigars, in fact all of the
many good things which he carries.
Mr. Fitch returned to Lake of the
Woods Tuesday and was accompanied
by several young ladies who rode horse
back. Thoy had a chnperone to nccom
pnny them. Among them were Miss
Lillian Relmer, MIsb Mildred Nye, Miss
Margaret Fitch, Miss Muriel Schuch
ard. The riders wont as far as Ash
land park, whore they had their first
camp, then went to Applogate ranch
From there they would go on to Lake
of the Woods.
It transpiroB that the new Overland
car which Rob Furry had was his
brother Milo's car that was seen stand
ing In his yard nnd was thought to be
long to Rob.
ThlB Friday evening Is the great
community gathering at Talent. There
will be a regular mob there to help
these good people add another good
thing to tho betterment of the town,
namely, a good piano, to be used In all
their public gatherings. The Ice cream
nnd cake will vanish like magic, while
the dimes will make dollars for the
good cause.
There is some early threshing being
done already In tho farming belt
around Talent. There Is need of the
grain for feed. Many of the farmers
will begin tho feeding ot hogs, as well
ns the ninny largo poultry flocks being
brought to laying age.
The many old acquaintances of Mrs.
McTuvisli, formor residents of old
String Town, ns it was called in those
days, were surprised to receive a visit
from herself nnd hor son George and
her daughtor, Mrs. Turner, and Bon
once
owned the film garden home no
owned by Noah Chandler. The M
Tavish family were touring Californi
and Oregon.
Many of the older residents of Tal
ent were grieved to learn of the accl
dent which befell Mrs. N. J. Hendrick-
son In Medford Saturday evening. Mrs
Hendrickson is well known In this pre
cinct, having lived here for many
years. All of her friends are hoping
for her early recovery.
Mr. and Mrs. J. E. FiBh of the Star
garden ranch south of Phoenix, made
a trip out to Beaver creek and Lost
Prairie last Sunday. They found the
country rich in scenery and a place
where one would love to go during the
hot days If only the roads were made
passable. -
The apricot crop Is being harvested
In Fem - Valley. Most of it is being
sold to the Ashland cannery people.
Tne Sunny Cliff orchard, Geo. Alford
Ward, Hughes, Dushon and others
have had an unusually good yield this
season.
Mr. and Mrs. Hitchcock and some of
their friends who were touring with
them called at the pleasant home of
Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Rader last Monday.
Mr. Hitchcock was principal of the
Ashland schools when Mrs. Rader at
tended school at that place. They
were also choir leaders in which Mrs
Rader was a member.

J. L. Weide was a Rogue River
visitor Tuesday morning.
T. G. Homer was transacting bus
iness in Grants Pass last Tuesday.
D. E. Neathamer passed away at
the Granite City hospital at Ashland
July 10, after an operation. He was
laid to rest In the Rogue River cem
etery last Tuesday.
George Neathhamer of Sheridan
and Mrs. Ella Root of Dunsmuir
Calif., attended the funeral. Mr.
Neathamer visited relatives here for
a few days and returned to his home
at Sheridan last Sunday. Mrs. Root
will remain here for some time with
relatives and friends.
Mr. nnd Mrs. Fred Halght start
ed for their home at Smith's River
Calif., last Monday, after visiting
with relatives in this locality for
several days.
Mr. Philips will sell his stock and
household goods at public auction
next Saturday and will soon leave for
California.
Robert Carter was a Gold Hill vis
itor last Sunday afternoon.
Miss Margaret Crawford returned
to her home at Hugo last Friday, af
ter spending a week with Miss Jessie
:Neathamer.
Allyn Davis, who waa a resident
of this locality about 25 years ago,
has been camping near Bybe Springs
for somo time, left last Monday
morning.
Mr. and Mrs. Earl Green of Idaho,
are guests at the home ot Mr. and Mrs.
U. Irwin.
Mr. nnd Mrs. D. W. Bagshaw are
spending a two weeks vacation with
their daughter, Mrs. C. E. Howe, at
Olympia, Wash.

election and my candidacy I wish to say a few words to the Voters of
Jackson County.

The sheriffs office has seenretl
tain classes of offenders. With an efficient, honest, ami capable
police and law enforcement administration working and cooperating
with a vigorous prosecutum, bootleg rings could have been broken
up by the arrest and conviction of their individual members and then
more or less prominent backers and defenders brought into whole
some disrepute. This should and could have been accomplished by
a capable and energetic local police administration and the tax payers
saved thousands of dollars paid out for the assistance of special
officers.
Another class of offenders directed against the majesty of the
law would never have led to the division and bitterness now existing
if they had been met promptly and vigorously by the sheriff and
other law enforcement officers of our county. I refer to the so-called
Ku Klux'Klan outrages. For the past three or four months indict
ments and convictions have been of daily occurrence by the newspa
per's and other biased 'and interested groups, mostly for political pur
poses, but no arrests have been attempted by our lawfully constituted
county authorities.
. '' These clinics, however simple their nature, have been magnified
and enlarged upon by rumor, hearsay and downright misrepresenta
tion, both from home and up-state sources, until they are now the
subject of a special grand jury investigation, with all its nttendant
expense and notoriety, with special) correspondents from the big
dailies, special prosecutors and assistants, ex-sleuths from Portland
and witnesses from Southern California, with precious grand goblin
records, all to make a Roman Holiday for the lawyers, nnd politicians,
at the expense of the people. And still a great hubbub is being raised
about the expense of a recall which is the only method under our
electoral system whereby the people can have a chance to remedy an
unbearable situation.
Now a word personal to myself. I have lived in Jackson County
13 years. All my life I have been engaged in productive and con
structive pursuits. I have a great
