The fire has been partly checked, it
is said.
The Wynochee Timber company,

through four million feet of cut logs.
The actual damage has. not been esti

enveloped almost 4000 acres In
northeastern Stevens county, accord
ing to John T. Kaftis, secretary of
the Stevens Countf Timber Protec
tive assoriation, who was here to con
fer with Mr. Pape today. The situa
tion is the worst ever experienced in
that part of the country, Mr. Raftis
said, and efforts to check the flames
have in most cases been rendered futile.

BENNY LEONARD
'CONFIDENT HE'LL
DEFEAT TENDLER
TUDD LAKE, N. J., July 23. This
was the last full day that Champion
Benny Leonard put in before his light
weight title bout with Lew Tendler of
Philadelphia at Boyle's Thirty Acres,
Jersey City, Thursday evening.
Before starting on his dally fivo mile
run around the rim ot the oval body
'of water from 'which this mosquito-
, bitten oasis of Ne Jersey derives its
namo Leonard made tills bald state
ment: "I'll hav.o no alibi if 1 lose and
I I'll be disappointed if I don't win by a
knockout before the seventh."
j For two weeks Leonard has been
Surrounded by his family mother,
three brothers and a sister, who stay
at a hotel not 100 yards from the train-
ing camp. Leonard says that today he
i at tha inn nf lifa nnrppT Ro ii nnnara

and as meticulously cared for as one
fed, rubbed and humored. He says
this is the best year he ever will have.
He feels so strong, lively and pugna
cious that he has broken all champion
ship records by boxing three top-
ndtchers within four weeks.
The previous two fights with Jack
Britton, welterweight champion, and
Rocky Kansas of Buffalo, have put him
on the necessary edge for Tendler, who
for more than a year has been the
logical contender. Feeling so positive
of himself, Leonard has signed for a
fourth bout with Ever Hammer, a lad
who has brought a two-fisted name for
himself in the middlewest.
This bout probably will be held at
Michigan City, Ind., August 5.
Leonard speaks slightingly of Tend
er's pugilistic ability. He holds Tend
ler cheaply, he says, because the Phila
delphia's record doesn't impress him.
..e avows that Tendler has been
floored too often by men lacking a gen
uine punch and that Tendler doesn't
tote the wallop that Leonard hai dem
onstrated that he carries in both
hands. He grants Tendler s aggres
siveness and a certain amount of
cleverness, but he withholds the label
"championship caliber.

"Wallace Reld didn't know much
about the type of car he had to drive,

used to big powerful motors, and at
first the little car seemed like a top to
him. But he found that it could make
