July 21, 1911 was a busy day in the
valley, according to the files of thin
paper. Citizens were fighting over
shortening the road to Central Point,
and a ludy mlndreader was holding
forth that evening at the Medford
theater the ruins are still Intact. The
farmers needed rain, as they nlways
do, and John Mann wus having a sale.
Internationally there wus peace, ex

THE FUNDAMENTAL trouble in this strike situation, lias little
to do with railroads and coal wines, but a great deal to do with
a thing called patriotism. , ' i
A patriot is one who will sacrifice his personal interests for the
interests of his country, who will place the welfare of his country as
a whole, above the welfare of any self-interested group.
If there were a few more real patriots both in the ranks of labor
oud the ranks of capital, these strikes now distressing the country,
cither never would have come about, or if initiated, would never have
conl inned to the present time.
Thcty'fore, what is needed is a leader, either in the ranks of capi
tal or labor, preferably the latter, who is a fiat riot in peace as well
as war, who lias the courage and the force and the conscience to take
a stand against this endless conflict between two equally selfish fac
tious, and voluntarily abandon a possible advantage to his class for
the common good. .
There must be such a lender. For otherwise, mass inertia will ren
der any satisfactory progress impossible. As it is today a deadlock
is inevitable in any nation-wide strike. As we said nt the start of the
present walk out, the strike was certain to get worse bej'ore it got bet
ter. For we have each faction waiting for the other to give in, not
daring to give ground on any important question for fear that it will
result in permanent loss to their special cause.
Such a moral atmosphere is hopeless. Before there can be any
permanent industrial improvement, a new spirit must be born. And
a really great leader could translate that spirit into effective action.
For once accept the principle that the interests of no group in this
country can be placed above the interests of the people as a whole,
end make a fight for that principle, not without, but within a group,
mid the gospel will spread like wild fire. For it is not only essentially
Christian' but essentially enlightened. Far from spelling defeat for
any class, it would prove every elasse's, and therefore the country's,
salvation.

To the Editor:
Tho sponsors for the recall of
Sheriff Terrlll are engaged In the
mime Indefinite, untrue and mislead
ing statements andconcluslons that
have characterized this proceeding
from tho beginning. For Instance,
they say:
"Tho question Is, will Terrlll
or will l.owe make the better
sheriff for the next two yeurs
nhd rive months?"
This Is not true and is misleading.
Tho Issue Is tlrst, has thero been a
sufriclent petition under the lnw for
a recall, a.nd second, has the sheriff
been guilty in commission, or omis
sion, of the things rnargod against
him In the petition? They say:
"If the two candidates are
equally qualified, they should
have nn equal, rhance for elec
tion, for Jacksou county owes
nothing to C. IS. Terrlll. He has
held the ol'flcofor severo.'. years
and has been amply paid for all
sorvlces rendered. Then duty
compels tho consideration or the
candidates npon their merits, to
determine which should be
chosen."
This is not true. The necessary
assumption to justify the recall Is
this: Is the sheriff guilty o the
criminal acts, or omission, legally
charged, or necessarily Implied In the
petition to Justify his recall? The
question of qualification or tho two
men is not an Issue at all. To say
that any orricer. duly elected, acting
and qualified, may at any time before
the expiration of his term bo re
called, IT some other man with equal
qualification, or better, wants it, or
his friends want Hint to havo it.
would bq absolutely destructive of
the tenure of office. laws; such a
proposition Ik too absurd Tor discus
sion. It Is niacin In the same way
that this whole proceeding has been
conducted by tho proponents; sim
ply to confuse and turn the minds or
Inattentive voters to a raise issue.
Again, they suy:
"This county has expended In
tho neighborhood ot $ 1,000 p?r
month for Imported help to en1
Torce the lnw made necessary by
the fact that the sheriff either
negligently or purposely ret'm.vl
to enforco It."
Afvin hero is a statement made
to confuse and decel;o those to
whom It is made. Into believing to
be true Hint which is absolutely
false. It will appear from tho rec
ords that the larger part of tho ex
penso for outsido help was In the
Jacksonville bank cases thut had no
relation, whatever, wl.tn tht sher

office in duties belonging to it.
These are only a few of iho fa'i

priM-menta or tho recall, it Is a .veil
