Last night's council meeting was
much shorter and Involved much lass
argument than Is usual. The only
argument between members of the
council was one -involving the question
of whether the rules slmuld be sus
pended or not so that the ordinance
mlghti be passed at once authorizing
the execution of a deed to tho armory
site to the state of Oregon for $7000
to be applied on the city's $20,000
share of the armory. Two of the ctnin
rilmen were not in favor of the suspen
sion of the rules and wished the re
mainder of the council to wait until
the next meeting when Mayor P
Gates would bo present as he lg ex
pected to return from his vacation at
Pelican Bay in a week. Regular pro
cedure provides that the. ordinance
he laid over until the next meeting for
a final vote. However tho vote was
taken . the rules .were suspended and
tho ordinance was passed, after which
the meeting brofte up at 9:30 and all
the--councilman became harmonious
with each other and were Invited by
Dick Antle to attend the show at his
"shrine of the silent art" in a body.

of Mrs. Cogill at Cinnabar Springs in
the Slsklyous was destroyed by a for
est fire last week, the cabins and build
ings being a total loss, and very little

known to many local people, who have

and would welcome the aid of Amer
ican naval experts in planning modern

Ting-Hsin said tonight at ' a dinner
given here in honor of Secretary Ed
win Denby of the American navy de
partment. '
LI-Ting-Hsin added that when China
became a progressive nation' an effic
ient navy would be essential to patrol
her coast for defensive purposes;
Secretary Denby replied without re
ferring to the appeal' for American aid
in building a navy. He expressed the
good wishes of America, for China's
welfare and said Americans regarded
an active navy as a factoe promoting
