Everett Miller, accompanied by Mrs.
Miller, has come from their southern
Oregon homo nt Applegate to stay In
Portland for a' while. Mr. Miller Is a
World war veteran, one of those who
spent a large part of his time In ser
vice In a prison camp in southern Gor
man y. He enlisted with the boys from
Enterprise and went across among the
first of them. He went up to the front
with the vanguard from the U. S. A
and they gobbled him up some place in
No Alan's land and took him down into
southern Germnny, whore thoy worked
him in a gang on various German
farms until the armistice came and he
was sent back into tho American lines.
In the meantime, he had bieen report
ed killed In action, and it wnsu't until
after the prison camps disgorged their
prisoners thnt the news of his safety
was brought back to his parents In
Oregon, Mr. Miller will spend some
time in Portland completing engineer

was charged with liquor possession,

there have been a number of raises,
the biggest of which came today.
Wholesale sugar prices advanced 30
cents a hundred pounds In Portland
Saturday morning, according to ad
vices received by wholosale houses
from the California reflnories. The
advance will be effective on the coast
almost Immediately In the retail trade.
The refineries advanced their prices
20 cents late Thursday, and before the
opening of business Friday announced
nnother 10-cent price jump. The ad

AT FAIR GROUNDS
The executive commitfea of the
Fair Association have ordered that
inoro carpenters be employed on the
buildings now being put up at the
fair grounds. The additional struc
tures contemplated will necessitate
there being greater progress made,
besides there will always be odds and
ends toward the opening of the fair
that take time to complete.
Six dollars a day Is the wage paid
to good carpenters. None hut men
who are experienced need apply, nor
need any apply who believe that this
is a county job and that It Is a good
place to loaf.
The direct supervision of the con
struction of the.buildings at the fair
grounds Is umiar a hard boiled build

fore the citizens of the county to pro
duce results. The committee is go
ing to make good and asks that car
penters give. their best efforts to help

OBITUARY,
BUOY Delbert W. Buoy passed
away at Denver, Coio., July 5. Mr.
Buoy was 111 the service of the United
States army, where he had served for
the past seven years and in which he
was serving at the time of his death.
He leaves, besides his mother, Mrs.
Dora Helms, four brothers and four
sisters. Elizabeth Helms, Roy, Mark
and Mnttle Buoy, who reside In
Washington. Nora Erickson, Oold
Hill, Ore., Ora Snnvely, Glen," Oil.,
Herbert and Clarence, La Grande,
Ore:
The remains will arrive In Medford
Sunday and funeral services will bo
held at the chapel of Weeks-Conger
Co., at 10:30 a. m Monday, Rev. D.
E. Millard officiating at the chapel,
and the concluding services nt tho
phoenix cemetery will he in charge
of the local post of the American Le

Bay Vernon Crum who passed away
at his home near Medford Thursday,
will be held nt the chapel of Weeks
Conger Co.; at 1:30 p. m., Sunday
July 9, Rev. J. Randolph Sasnett will
officiate and interment will be In
