about $135,000,000 in the wages of
some 1,200,000" railroad : employes
which became effective at the same
time that a ten per cent cut in freight
rates' amounting to about $400,000,
000 went into effect, still leaves
hourly wages measured in actual buy
ing power-above the wages of De
cember, 1917, Just before government
control,' according' tofigures com
piled' by the United States railroad
labor board. ' " ''' '
" Machinists who belong ; to the
shop crafts which have ' gone on
strike were cut 7 cents an hoar. They
averaged 77.3 cents and now aver
age '70.3 cents. Iri-1917 'the 'rate was'
50.0, the new hour rate being '39 per
cent higher. Cost of living, accord
ing to labor board figures, is 17 per
cent higher than in December, 1917.
The board figures the new hourly
rate for machinists 19 per ceh great
er in real purchasing power than in
December, 1917. j
Car. men cut 9 cents an hour, now
have an average hourly wage of 64.4
cents, as compared with 37.7 cents
an hour in December, 1917, the
board's figures show. This repre
sents a. net increase of 71 per cent in
cash and an advance of 45.7 per cent
in equal purchasing power of the
hourly wage, the board maintains.
By a similar mathematical process
the increase of machinists is figured
aa seven per cent.
The $135,000,000 wage cut made
effective July 1, is divided as fol-

The national industrial confer
ence board has made a comparison
of the new wage rates with those in
1914, using its own cost of living in
dex. It places the average earnings
of the four main groups which had
their wages cut at about 19 per cent
higher than ' in 1914, measured in
buying power.

EPPERSON Anna Idella Epperson
died at the home of her son William
