is now at Palo Alto, Calif., from which

Geological Survey. He will return, to
the U. of 0. next fall to take his mas
ter's degree and will he assistant in

Stanley , Dodge, a Medford young
man and ex-service man, was taken
into custody early this week for a men
tal examination, following which he
was committed to the state hospital
for treatment by County Judge Gard
ner. He was taken to the hospital at
Salem last night by Attendant Scott
of that Institution.' -

one of the contractors. These men
were taken up to their place ot em

Samuel .W. Shockey, 74 years old
globe trotter, is, spending a day in
the city while on his lust lap on his
return to Long Beach. His last trip
has taken him through Arizona, New
Mexico, Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas,
Missouri, Iowa,- Illinois, . Wisconsin,
South Dakota, North Dakota, Minne
sota, Montana, Idaho, Washington and
Oregon. He is making this last trip by
rail, occasionally practicing phrenology
and palmistry to pay his way. He also
writes .weekly articles for a Los An
geles paper. He is a member of the
G. A. R., having served with the 82nd
Ohio infantry during the Civil war. He
was in the 19th infantry after the war
for five years. Mr, Shockey states that
he is thoroughly .enjoying his trip.

ed away very suddenly at his home in
Seattle last night. Mr. .Sheridan was
well known and liked in "this city
where he resided 'for a number of
years. While a resident, of .Medford
he was a' partner with James D. Bell
it; the Nash Hotel and wns locully
known for his generosity and genial-
ity ....
Mr. Sheridan is survived by his
wife and a nine, year old . son, John.
The family left this city aiid took up
their residence In Seattle some five or
six years ago.

members of the commission, was

thorized, has announced he could not
conscfentloiusly support tho resolu
tion, and Commissioner McCoy, the
third member of the commission, who
wns elected -along with Kerrigan in
the recall election, said he hud the
resolution under consideration. ( The
resolution did not come, up today.
The next meeting of the commission
will be Monday.

Herbert Nunn, state highway en
gineer, said the slgiiB are a menace to
safety, declaring that a motorist,
while rending a sigh of ten letters,
will ordinarily drive 140 feet, in
which time he may drive off the road
or Into another machine.
Nunn explained he had : been
aroused by the activities of a Boise
business man who had been plaster
ing telephone poles along the Oregon
trail with stencil signs purporting to
give the highway another name.
