president or the United Mine Workers
of America, commenting today on the
mine troubles at Herrin, Illinois, said:
"Insofar us President Lewis' mes
sage, is concerned, it positively could
not have had any bearing on the occur
rences at Iicrrin. The organization
denies any responsibility for the trou
ble. We must await more definite re
ports ' from Herrin before saying
more."
President Gompers of the American
Federation of Labor, suid as he under
stood from press reports from Herrin,
Illinois, that the firing first came from
within the mine stockade and it was
then that the miners returned the fire.
"Organized labor,' said (tampers,
"does not countenance any such acts

plane," added Mr. Uompers, "for vio
lence to have any place in it."

states that field reports now indicate

those of 1919. The sales so fur tills
year are far ahead of the record for
the corresponding period of 1921, Mr.

of its 18 years of operation.

miners deny they kilted any strike
breakers. The correspondent accosted a
striking miner and the following con
version follow-'!:
"Mow many were killed?" the cor
respondent nuked.
"No one killed at all."
"Why, the dead are all over," the
correspondent countered.
"We didn't kill them, they just
dropped dead from fright when we
surrounded their camp."
The Btriker then asked whether the
military was coming here, adding "if
the militia comes down here, that
will mean just bo many more guns
for us."
The fighting has ceased and the
only signs of the -fight at the Strip
mine are occasional piles of spent
bullets. Groups of strikers are on
all corners of Johnson City, Marionr
Westfrankfort and Herrin.
In attacking tho Strip mine this
morning the strikers surrounded It,
"went over tho top" of the high coal
embankment surrounding the surface
colliery in unison and took the mine
employes prisoners. The prisoners
then were divided among groups of
strikers and taken !n different directions.
NEW YORK, June 22. A commit
tee of three chosen from fifty of the
largest philanthropic, welfare, educa
tion and labor organizations of tho
country was named today at a confer
ence with Will Hays, head of tho mo
tion' picture producers and distribu
tors of America, to nominate a nation
wide board to present a program for
tho Improvement of American movies.

TOKIO, Juue It. (By Associated
Press). The Yap treaty with the
United States' was approved by the
privy council and Japanese prince re
gent today. The treaty fixes the rights
of each nation, in the island which is
under Japanese mandate.
The government's position on the
Yap question was deemed unsatisfac
tory by the committee which investi
gated the treaty, for the privy council,
and tho committee requested the gov
ernment to use greater care in the
future when dealing with such grave
negotiations. However, the committee
reported the treaty favorably to the
council through desire to respect the
foreign relations of the empire and the
spirit of the Washington conference.
The council unanimously approved
the treaty, which then was sanctioned
by Crcwn Prince Hlrohito, Jhe regent
to the throne. Letters of ratification,
it was said, would be signed and de
spatched, to Washington within a few
days by an official messenger. '
SANTA FE FLYER IS
TOPEKA, Kans., June 22. Four
cars of westbound Atchison, Topcka
and Santa Fe passenger train No. 1,
Chicago to California, were derailed
shortly before noon, at Corliss, near
Molliday, Kansas, 15 miles west of
Kansas, City, according to meagre re
port received by officials of the road
here. A number of passengers were
reported slightly injured. The cars
wero reported piled against a bluff.
The Kansas river runs on opposite
sides of the track.

Associated Press) More fighting is
anticipated in tho region of Canton.
Ten thousand tro;ipn loyal to Sun
Yat Sen, deposed president of the
China republic, are reported return
ing toward Canton from a northern
expedition.
Dispatches from Canton dated
Monday said developments since Sat
urday had been unimportant. Fight
ing had ceased. Sun's routed troops
were awaiting reinforcements. The
citys railroads nnd strategic posi
tions held by Chen Chlung-Mlng, the
general who, in tho interest of the
Peking government, drove Sun Yat
into exile and reported capture.
Casualties in the Canton fighting
are estimated here at 200. , The
American consul and the com
mander of the United States 1 de
stroyer 217, which was stationed at
Canton, boarded a Chinese cruiser to
protest agninst the firing near for
eign concessions. Sun's wife is miss
ing and believed a captive.
