SAN FRANCISCO, June 20. The
separation, of the Southern Pacific and
Die Central Pacifjq railroad systems

cific that the Central Pacific would fall

byiMr. Sproule with the statement that
his company desires nothing more
than a maintenance of the present
mergers and relations.
"The Southern Pacific has not
sought and is not seeking ownership
of other lines" he said.
The Southern and Central Pacific
systems have so fused into one system
that the name Central Pacific lias been
I virtually lost sight of, Mr. Sproule
' said. In the event of a separation, the
Central Pacific, would have to connect
mi its Hdmrnto lines nnd rp-iu-rnnirfi Its
terminals. In order to continue profit
able' operation and the Southern Pacific-would
have to do the same.
Both would involve expenditures'
from which the public would derive no I
benefits, he said, and after it was all,
over there would have been no better
ment of the service. The train runs
would become "misfits" and as the
separation would be without relations
to present division nnd train arrange
ments, there would be the likelihood of
great and costly confusion.
CHICAGO SHIFT
CHICAGO, June 20. Wheat scored
a moderate upturn In price today dur
ing the early dealings, an unexpected
advance in Liverpool quotations acting
as the chief stlinrtlas. A rally in ster-j
ling exchange also was a bullish fac-l
tor and there was talk that some over
night export business had been done.
The opening, which varied from un
changed figures to ' higher, July
$1.10 'A to $1.10 and September
$1.10 to $1.11 was followed by
gains all around.
Corn and oats were firmer with
wheat. After opening unchanged to
hie higher, July 61 to 61, the corn
market made a moderate general ad
vance. Oats started at 1-8 off to a like up
turn, July 34'4 and then went higher
for all deliveries.
Provisions responded to higher quo
tations on hogs. , .

premier, had a three hours conference
today with David Lloyd-George, British
prime minister. The statesmen dis
cussed German reparations, the Hague
conference, the Tangier situation aid
Greco-Turkish relations. ' '
vith regard to reparations, It was
decided tbut the reparations commis
sion should Investigate the read condi
tions of German finances and endeavor
to determine whether, with the assis
tance of a foreign loan, Germany could
balance her budget or otherwise estab
lish her currency.
With regard to The Hague confer
ence there was an agreement on the
basis that any decisions of the-confer-
ence should be a referendum, and
that the experts could make their rec
ommendations and the respective gav
ernments then would be free to take
whatever action that they please.
With regard to the near eastern
question, it was agreed that the Brit
ish and French governments should
expedite the appointment of commis
sions proposed by Great' Urttain' to In
vestigate statements by American eye
witnesses of massacres of Greeks and
counter charges by the Greeks and
Turks, of wholesale killings In the war
areas.
CLOSE CONVENTION
Indianapolis, June 20 Final
business sessions of the 15th .annual
convention of the northern Baptist
convention were held today prior to
the adjournment this afternoon or to
night. Seattle, Washington, Is to be
the 1923 meeting place of the conven

Resolutions favoring the repeal In
certain states of the legislation which
prevents the reading of the bible in
public schools, advocating child wel
fare legislation, condemning lynching
and mob violence, and supporting
strict enforcement of the Volstead law,
were adopted at last night's session.

In a'gun battle with officers search
ing his home for liquor at Pomona,
near here, John Telarlca was shot and
killed by Sheriff Frank Ducray, and
W. H. Trimble, prohibition officer, was

of experts rested today, while notifi
cation went forward to Moscow of
formation of the sub-commissioners,
which will negotiate with tho soviet
delegation In regard to Russian af
fairs. The president of the mnln commis
sion nnd the chairman of the three
Hub-commiHHlons will be elected to
morrow. These four heads will form
a sort of central committee to insure
unity of action.
France's decision to participate in
the conference is explained as con
tingent solely on the condition that
the meeting "is merely a reunion of
experts ad referendum" in other
words that all decisions shall take
tho form of mere suggestions to their
home governments nnd that' all po
liticnl questions be prohibited.
France also reserved tho right to
withdraw her delpgates at any time
if tho attitude of tlie soviet repre
sentatives appears to render it neces
sary.
DAMASCUS, Syria, June 20. Nazlr
Al Abed, an Arab girl who took a
prominent part in fomenting revolt
against French rule and who was sen
tenced to prison for life has escaped.
Stern measures adopted by General

Alleppo and Horns during the last few
