That insect of astonishing life, the
seventeen year cicada, is now in the
trees. The males are making a sound
which suggests a far away Niagara, a
wind riding the foroBt at a distance
and threatening to awcep down upon
the hearer, something menacing and
unknown beyond the vision.
-' The harvest fly, a two year cicada,
comes later In the summer. There are
two broods and so one every year. It
has a defined sound which can be
traced to a place and a cause, a song,
so called, which is fascinating or irri
tating. The rush of winds which the
seventeen year brocd imitates Is over
head but also far away, something
which seemingly must swell, approach,
and burst In fury.
Under the trees are tho holes out of
which the grub camo. The skin which
It wore when it emerged can be found
on the ground or still clinging to
boards or wire mesh where It slit to
allow the cicada to take to the air and
live Its second and hroed.
The female is silent. Tho male Is
the wind In the oak tops. He dies In a
short while, eating nothing while he
lives, and the ground soon is covered
with the dead. The female lives sev
eral weeks. She has sawllko oviposi
tors, and with them makes a gash in a
