A REAL ISSUE AT LAST.

Maine's present political example is followed, a new political
issue will stir the country, an issue removed from such unpleasant
mid irrelevant items as religion, race, and the alcoholic content of Ba
varian buttermilk.
For State Senator Davies of Maine, a married man, it seems, is
opposing Senator Hale, a bachelor, for the Republican nomination,
largely on the ground that the incumbent, by reason of his failure
to marry, is unable to understand the "finer things of life, that
should be part of the knowledge of a man who is to legislate for a
nation." (Sic.) .
Fine! Here is an issue worth fighting over. Of course, Senator
Hale will have his comeback. lie will cynically point to the fact that
a married man lias troubles enough without bcing'sent to the senate.
All the time-honored chestnuts about mothers-in-law and Mrs. Jiggs
and the family check-signer will be grist for his mill.
'
But how expeditiously will Benedict Davies annihilate such an of
fensive. lie will promptly demonstrate that a vote for Hale will mean
a vote for spinsterhood, a vote for race suicide, a vote for a bachelor
made world. To jump from this to bootleggers, flappers and the nar
cotic ring, is a mere bagatelle for a proficient politician.
So it looks dark for Senator Hale. He has been a good senator
perhaps, but when he adopted the slogan that "eternal vigilance is
the price of celibacy," he didn't look forward to the time, every dis
appointed maiden would have a vote.
No more single men in congress! That is the new slogan for a re
juvenated and regenerated G. O. P. 'Who wants a White House
without a bastinette. Not Mrs. Uncle Sam. Back to your hotel
apartment and your humidor, Senator Hale. A new world and a new
issue are desired and you are not.

WEEK END.
OH, THE WEEK-END in my cottage makes me feel as. fine as
silk; here I cat my humble pottage, swimming in denatured
milk; now I feel that I'm in clover, and I sing in joyous tones,
for the week of toil is over and I'vcdrawu my eighteen bones.
Here the week-end's always found me since John Barleycorn was
canned, with my smiling aunts around 'me, and my grandma
pounding sand. Once when I had drawn my wages to the gin
bazaar I went, and progressed, by fluid stages, till I didn't have

heart was sore, as their vigils they were keeping, waiting at the

Getchell, rancher was seriously in
jured yesterday when ho was gored by
a bull on his ranch neor here. Three
ribs were broken and he suffered other
injuries. He became unconscious dur
