WASHINGTON', June. "Very
much unheard of before," one of the
glacier experts of the Geological Sur
vey said skeptically when recently
shown reports and photographs of the
"Grasshopper Glacier, which lies just
outside of the northeast corner of the
Yellowstone national park.
However, the glacier Is thore for
any one to see, officials of the Na
tional park service said today. Im
bedded in Its ice there are thousands
of grasshoppers of an extinct specie3,
which must have been flying over the
mountains in living clouds when they
were caught in snowstorms and kill
ed, later to be preserved for count
less years in solid ice.
The glacier which lies in great
cirques at the head of Rosebud river
is comparable to any of the big gla
ciers of the Rockies, the Park service
asserted. It is a safe glacier, having
few crevices. The view from the
glacier is described as exceptionally
fine, due to the towering sawtooth
mountains about it, aivtl the yawning
canyons of. the Rosebud below.
