KLAN GUILTY OF
SENDING LETTER
As was expected tlio two vlsltliiK
KleaKles of the Ku Klux KInn called
on Judge I M. Calkins following the
Judge's statement in Saturday's Mail
Tribune, to deny that the Klan had
anything to do with the sending of
the threatening letter lo the Judge
concerning his granting a new trial to
Oud Wolnamott.
Sunday morning lho professional
explainers for the K. K. K.- telephon
ed the Judge and askod for an inter
view. H is honor granted it, on the
front lawn, whore nothing could he

Probably there Isn't a fairer mind
ed man in Southern Oregon than
.ludge Calkins, or a more even tem
pered one, but ho has no use for Ku
Klux apologists and doesn't caro who
knows It. In reply to the well worn
formula that thf. K. K.,K. never sends
threatening letters, is never guilty of
violence, stands for law and order.
etc., etc.. Judge Calkins replied that
when the Ku Klux Klan, cleaned its
own house, when they ran down the
unknown parties guilty of at least
three outrages in Jackson county, he
would be in a better mood to accept
the statements at their face value. -
It was a brief interview, but very
much to the point. According to re
ports the two Kleagles didn't particu
larly enjoy it. '
