MARRYING ITSELF
OUT OF EXISTENCE
HONOLULU, T. H. The Hawaiian
race la not "dying out," but in reality
Is "marrying Itself out of exltitence,"
I according to a statement made here
by Miss M. Hester Lemon, registrar
of vital statistics.
Although there has been no material
increase in the death rate of pure-
blooded Hawalluns during the past
four years, the birth rate for the calen
dur year 1921 showed a material de
crease as compared with those of the
four preceding years and indicated
that Hawaiian men and women are de
stroying their own race by marrying
into other groups, yhe said.
"It will he seen readily that this
practice will tend to increase the part
Hawaiian population and at the same
time decrease the pure Hawaiian popu
lation Insofar as the future is con
cerned," she added.
During the fiscal year ending June
SO, 1921, there were 1(9 marriages be-
twoen pure Hawaiian couples. In ad
dltlon to these, 58 Hawaiian men mar-
lied women of other races and 142
Hawaiian women were married to men
of other groups. Illrths among pure
Hawaiian families during the calendar
year 1921 were 42 less In number than
those registered during the fiscal year
ending June 30, 1921.
PAYS PENALTY
. SALT LAKE CITY, June' 9. Nick
Oblizalo was executed at the Utah
state prison this morning for the mur
dor of Marco Laus, a nilner, who was
stabbed to death and robbed of $1200
in a lonely spot on -the outskirts of the
city August 3, 1919. Oblizalo appeuled
to Governor Mabey of Utah yesterday
for a reprieve, but the state executive
after conferring with members of tho
state board of pardons, refused to
intercede. The board had previously
declined to commute the death sen
tence. - Steve Maslish who perpetrated the
murder with Oblizalo was executed at
the prison January 20. Both men chose
death-by shooting Instead of hanging.

book found on tho body as W. H.
Brooks of Napa, Cal., was found dead,
hanging by a rope In a woods nenr
hero today by railroad linemen. On
the first page of the bank book, which
showed a savings account of $270 de
posited at the First National bank
here a few days ago, was a note asking
that the body be burled' In Oregon and
that the account be transferred to "my
Nan account." ' '

for a non-partisan political campaign
