This Is the third reduction that has
been made by the Southern Pacific
lino in Oregon, during the past CO
days, tho others being on tin cans and
empty barrels.
The new tariff on canned goods pro
vides rates under which two or more
canneries may ship 15,000 pound b of
canned goods at carload rates, subject
to minimum charge of $15 per car, for
consolidation into carload quantities
for eastern transcontinental ship
ment b. The minimum carload weight
under transcontinental rates is 80,000
rounds, and an the pack of many of
the eannerloB along the Southern Pa
cific is small and necessarily restrict
ed to u few varieties of fruits, berries
or vegetables, It Is frequently difficult
for one cannery to make up a carload
of CD, 000 pounds of tho various kinds,
but by being able to consolidate and
ri'Hlilp the output of ono cannery with
that of another, the smaller canneries
will bo enabled to diHHse of. their out
put to not only greator advantngo, but
encourage larger and mora diversified
packs.

ing factor in the success of the farm
ing communities of California has been
a strong, healthy canning industry,
well financed, and operated under a
thoroughly organized and competent
sales organization. The Southern -Pacific
hopes to do. what it can to encour
ago tile same conditions on their lines
in Oregon.
Tho demand for canned farm pro
ducts is becoming greater all the time
and while owing to general depression
following the war, a general slump oc
curred in tho prices of canned goods
and many canneries found it difficult
to dispose of stock except at heavy
losses, this condition was only tem
porary and due entirely to decreased
buying power in the United States and
foreign countries. Tho situation, how
ever, as stated, was only temporary
nnd did not represent any index for
the future To the contrary, the out
look for tho canning industry was
never brighter. Liquidation has large
ly taken placo and stocks are all pretty
well depleted.
Through canning, cider, vinegar and
picklo plants, tho farmers are enabled
to find a ready murkol for that portion
of their crops that they are unable to
market in the green or fresh state.
It is hoped that strong hands will talto
hold of tho developments In 'Oregon,
and as Is tho caso in California, there
will ho a coordination of interest as
between the former, canning industry
and reaiionsiblo marketing ngenclcs.

dozen muffins:
Four tablespoonfuls flour, four
tablespoonfuls bran, one table
spoonful lard, one tablespoonful
butter, one tablespoonful baking
powder, one tablespoonful sugar,
two eggs, one-fourth pint cold
milk, a pinch of salt.
Mix the above thoroughly, flour
with baking powder, add lard and
butter, mix nnd add bran, eggs
and milk, bake in hot oven twenty,
minutes.

plants. Thoy will continue as in tho
past, their policy of carrying such re
duced rates and taken altogether, tho
farmer nnd fruit grower has had the
active support of the Southern Pacific.
In fact, they are applying tho same
broad policy to agriculture that thoy
j-havo allied to the lumbering indus
try.
The question as to whethor women

nOCHJE RIVER. June 7. The Daily
Vacation Bible school wound up with
a picnic on Friday afternoon in tho
park and a .demonstration Sunday
evening at Community hall which was
very interesting and proved that the
pupils had studied good and learned
their lessons well. There was an
average of 45 In attendance during the
day classes and 20 In the evening
class.
.Mrs. Anna Clark took her class of
girls on a two days camping trip up
around the hatchery. Prof, and Mrs.
Ilrowno went. along. They all report
having had a splendid time.
Miss Evelyn Carstens left Monday
for a throe months visit with relatives
in the cast. , '

renovated In preparation for the com
ing of Rev. Gray'8 family in the near
