Sing prison for the murder of Henry
Werner hero In February, 1321. bases
his hope of escaping the electric
chair. Attorney for the condemned
man here announced that they will
appeal for another trial on the
K round of newly discovered evidence
In the form of rubber boots.
After tho discovery of Werner's
body In r ravine suspicion was di
rected to Warder and the dead man's
widow. Under pressure of question
ing Warder declared that he was In
love with Mr. Werner and that as
nhe Would not leave her husband, he
hot Werner while on a rabbit hunt
ing trip. After Warder' conviction.
Mrs. Werner was placed on trial and
Warder, a witness at the trial, chang
ed hiB story, saying that Mrs. Werner
killed her husband with an axe and
that he helped her carry the body to
the place where It was later found.
In order to hide the axe wound, he
said, he fired his gun at Werner's
head. Warder also testified that
when they took away Wernc'a body
Mr. Werner put on a pair of rubber
boots over her shoes.
According to Warder's lawyer the
rubber boots that have recently been
found show on the inside the impres
sion of the heel of a woman's shoe.
A few weeks aco. Warder was re
moved from the death house at Sing
Sing to the prison hospital where an
operation for appendicitis was per
formed upon him.

SOCIETY MEETS JUNE 1
The Womens' Foreign Missionary
society of the First M. E. church will
meet with Mrs. Sidney S. Smith, 906
West Main, Thursday, June 1st at
2:30. instead of Friday. Mrs. Ed
Fhlppa will be program leader and will
present the pageant, "Send Out the
Light" She will be assisted by a num
ber of ladies. Mrs. Ed Steep, Dr.
Virginia Riggs, Mrs. Win. Lyman and
Mrs. O. O. Myers will be assistant
hostesses with Mrs. Smith. All ladies
of the church are cordially invited.

Arthur Moore made a trip to Med
ford last week on business.
Ezra Whitley was helping Ljfmer
Ivey plant his potatoes.
Geo. Hall Is building a flume to
carry water to his alfalfa.
Weston Miller Is working for Miss
Inez Willets.
Elmer Ivey and Hazel Pence of the
Elk Creek school have successfully
passed the eighth grade examination,
prescribed by the Oregon state board
of education.
Mrs. Sturgis visited Mrs. L. A. Whit
ley Friday.
Dave Pence has charge of the teams
which are working on the road from
Trail to Prospect. L. A. Whitley, How-
ard Ash, George and Henry Trusty are
also working on the road. All are
from Elk creek.
Ezra Whitley and Elmer Ivey made
a trip to Ashland to attend the Union
county meet, where the certificates
were given out In person by Miss
Homes.
VV. Willfts and Henry Thornton wenl
to Medford Monday.
Marcel Sandoz has ended his visit
at the Will its place and returned to his
home Monday. He has bad a long visit
and reports that he had a good time.
Ezra Whitley and Elmer Ivey are
burning slashing.
" Henry Trusty and George . Trusty
visited their folks on Elk creek Satur
day. Miss Frances Greb also was
visiting at the same time.
The Persist school is busy fulfilling
the directions on their club work,
which is camp cooking, as they have
made several camping trips.
Mr. and Mrs. Fred Sturgis have jour
neyed to town several times in the
past week.
Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Miller returned
home after a long term of prospecting.
They have a very bad cold.
PHOENIX SCHOOL NOTES
The Senior class went to Ashland
Monday; picnlced in the park and
went to tho show in th'e afternoon.
It has been the cuBtom of the prin
cipal for yearn to take hig senior
class on a picnic one day during
commencement week.
The school observed Memorial
day with appropriate exercises. Mon
duy afternoon, both grades and high
uehool taking part.
The Junior class entertains thu
senior class Tuesday evening. This
banquet is always a long looked-for
affair each year.
The llaccalaureate sermon was de-
lillvelield to a large audience last
