A' POETICAL FARMER
This is the song of the poor man,
Who walks where the meek have
trod,
He passes alons with a merry song,
And places his truut in God.
Close by the fireplace sitting,
In its cheery gleam and glare,
As winter blasts go raging past,
I sit iu the old arm chair.
My house is small, my family large.
Hut where there's a will there's a
, way,
I gladly work, while others shirk,
And my heart is llgirt and gay.
My winter's stores are running short,
I have many mouths to feed,
But I worry not for it's been my lot
To receive the things I need.
I till the soil from early morn
Tilt drops the summer sun,
Then home at night, to my delight
I go when the day is done.
My fields will soon be looking green,
The trees will be in bloom,
For in the spring, all things must sing,
The aim will allay the gloom.
A table for me is waiting
When my daily work' in o'er,"
And my .fumlly will greet, with glee,
When I open the cottage door.
Though hnrrl I toll to-eko our fare,
Yet sach is his lot who farms, ,
llut I have the smilo, of a wife the
while, ' '
And the clusp of my children's arms.

POP ANSON.
TIE grand old man has gone to sleep, t rest his weary
frame, and as our motto we should keep his watchword,
"Play the game." "A game's not finished till it's done," pop.
Anson used to say; and more than once the" game was won that
seemed all fooled away. .I've read the works 6f many seers, of
sages gray and wise, and in those works no redo appears more
grateful to the eyes than Old Pop Anson Vi "Play the game,"
when things were all askew, aml.players, lacking lofty aim, were
grouchy, sore and blue. Confucius sat upon a fence and reeled
off sound advice, and ancient Greeks, possessed of sense, put up
much useful ice; and Romans, too in olden times, made words of
wisdom fly, in epigrams and sounding rhymes that were not
meant to die. And those old patriarchs, indfd, piled up a death
less fame; but none gave forth a finer rede than Anson's "Play
the game!" Let's paste this motto in our hats as down this
world we slide, And in otir belfries fewer hats will afterwards
aldde. Ami it will make our quarrels brief, we'll gain the world's
regard, and we will dodge a lot of grief that makes the sledding
hard. The winds will sigh, the rain will drp, above his sleeping
frame, but we'll remember good old Pop, and try to play the
game.
