WASHINGTON, May 3. For the
second time In three months, firemen
early today battled with .a stubborn
tire on the root ot the treasury de
partment, which ror a time assumed
menacing proportions as the flames,
burning through a long superstruc
ture, leaped high In tho air and cast
a threatening glow on tho White
House, while sparks wafted across to
its surrounding terrace.
When discovered at 1:45 a. m. the
flames already had gained consider
able headway and were thirty or forty
teef high when fire apparatus arrived
at the scene.

Castle Captured!
KILKENNY, Ireland. May 3. (Bf
the Associated Press.) Sharp fight
ing, with machine guns rattling In all
direction, was In progress here today,
free state- troops trying to- restore Or'
mond castle, still held by irregulars
who yesterday were driven out of
other places they had captured.
The castle is a strong fortress on
the banks of the river Nore, and Is
considered impregnable except by ar
tillery. This morning Btormlng parties un
der command of Colonel Prout of the
Dail Elreann official forces advanced
on the castle by different routes, fol
lowed by an armored car. They were
fired upon by snipers iu the streets
and a fierce engagement ensued, well
directed fire being maintained against
the castle from several angles.
The Imperial hotel which Is dom
inated by the castle and which has
been occupied since its recapture hy
Dail troops, is under fire Itczi the
castle garrison.
The defenders of the castle are said
to be well equipped with provisions.

ed while the fighting was in progress
and passengers alighting here were
