THE VALUE OF THE "DELATED CALYX" APPLICATION FOR
CONTROLLING THE CODDLING MOTH IN BARTLETT PEARS
By M. A. YOTHERS, j
Government Entomologist
CALYX APPLICATION KOlt CON-
TUOI.L1NV, THE CODLING MOTH
IN 1UTLKTT PKAUS.
U is the general supposition that the
first poison spray necessary for cod
ling moth control on pears is that ap
plied Just previous ' to the hutching
of the earliest first brood worms
and that a "calyx" application,
as applied to apples Just ns the
last of the blossoms are tailing.
Is entirely superfluous. This idea Is
based 'upon the supposition that pear
calyces remain open Indefinitely and
that the poison spray can be placed In
them at an' time. It was with the Idett
of determining the Value of this theory
In practice that the writer made a
comprehensive test oh this point the
past season. .
One ot the worst infested Ilartlett
tracts ta the valley, the old
Irwin orchard, was selected for
our experiments. This orchard con
sisted hypothetlcally of 900 medium
and large sixe trees. For our experi
mental purposes the tract was divided
into 21 parts each part an experi
ment. All of the plats but four were
given their first spraying for the cod
ling moth on May 10-13. which wss In
reality not a "calyx" application, as we
use the term with reference to apple

SWEDEN AND I
I.S.
CONNECTED BY
STOCKHOLM For the first time
In history, Sweden and the united
States will have direct telefjraphic
communication through the erection
of a high power radio station which
is to be constructed immediately on
the Swedish west coast. Heretofore
all cable or radio communications
between the two countries were re
layed from London to Paris.
The Hiksdair longr tigo appropriated
the initial sum of 2.000,000 kronor,
more than IS50.000 to begin the
work, but it was not until recently
that the Swedish state telegraph
board and the radio corporation of
America reached a satisfactory
agreement, under which the fees for
all radio traffic will be divided
equally between the two countries.
When the state telegraph board re-
ported to the Swedish government
that the previous obstacles in the
way of building the station hnd been
removed, contract bids were called
for from the leading radio construct
ing companies of tho world. On the
basis of offers thus obtained it is
calculated that tho cost of the new
station -will not exceed 6,000,000 kro
nor, about f 1,400,000.
Ono reason strongly favoring an
immediate start ot work is the se
rious unemployment situation In
Sweden. It is believed that at least
$1,000,000 will find its way into the
pockets of tho Swedish Jobless who
will be engaged in building the sta
tion.
The total telegraphic traffic be
tween North and Central America
amounted last year to 1,660,000
words. The hend office of the new
station will be located in Gothen
burg. Yesterday's Rexmlt.

spraying (when S5 to 90 per cent of
the blossoms have fallen) . but rather
a "delayed calyx" application. In the
case of Partlett pears, however, it may
prove that the real "calyx" aprny may
be applied for a longer time after the
blooms have fallen than is the cane
with apples. The four plats omitted
May 10 13 were plats II. XI. XV and
XVIII. At the second spraying May
2tl-June 1, all plats were sprayed. This,
according to our life history studies
and our orchard observationswas just
previous to the hatching of the earliest
first brood codling moth larvae. There
Is no factor entering into the compari
son ot the 16 sprayed plats with the
4 omitted plats, other than this omis
sion of this first spray, that could pos
sibly produce the results shown In the
first diagram, and since the results
indicated continue in about the same
relation throughout the season and nt
harvest time. It Is evident that the
superiority of the 16 plats, which re
ceived the delayed calyx spray, is due
!to that one factor alone. The only
exception to this statement Is that
plat IV was sprayed with twice the
normal amount of poison, and pint XII
was sprayed with calcium arsenate,
which prove entirely inadequate In
Controlling the codling moth.
I Two methods were Msed in deter-
1 mining these results. (1) Hand exam

(I) Band Examination
On July 12-13, July 22-23 and Auftust

about the trunks ot the trees, were
examined and nil larvae and pupae
destroyed. At the first examination It
was not our purpose to use the results
in comparing the various plats, but
only to determine the per cent of
pupation at that date. Later, however,
it occurred to the writer to sum up the
number of Individuals found In each
plat and make a comparison. This
was done with the rexulta shown In
the first figure. Lntr examinations
ronrimed the results of the first ex

It is conspicuously appaivnt that the
