1 THE CAREFUL WIFE.
HOW DOUBLY fortunate the man whose wife on thrifty
plans is set! She guards his roll and ties the can to every
scheme that hints of debt. The country's full of working men,
who carry home the chickenfeed, and fain would Mow in every
yen for sillj- things they do not need. Too often wives encourage
men to throw their kopecks to-the eows ; such females warm, but
now and tin n we see the other kind of frans. "When Hiram brings
his weekly pay. he says, Matilda Judith Jane, let's go ami blow
ourselves .today : this savin? graft gives me a pain. Oh, here ho
bucks that bravely shine, and here be bones that glow like tin;
they are too fair to put in brine, so come with me and blow them
in. "We'll buy a flivver, new and nice, and all that to your heart
appeals, and if I cannot pay the juice, my stand-off's good for
many wheels." Then says the wife, of Spartan mold, "J. Hiram
Jinks, hand me your pay ! 1 think I sec you wasting gold that wc
will need when we are gray! Here is a nickel you may spend,
take it along and paint the towg, but let your foolish twaddle end
your wages will be salted down. And' when wc both are old
and bald we'll have our little bunch of kale, ami neighbors will
not see us hauled to yonder poorhouso in the vale."

The Danger Point
in trying to save on painting
Repairs Cost More Than Paint
WHEN the paint on your
property begins to check
and crack, it is time to paint
again. Unless your house is
protected by a smooth, clastic
lilm of durable paint, tlVcay will
set in and rapidly depreciate it.
Decay is expensive and waste
ful. Price lumber alone, to get
an idea of what it will cost to
repair or rebuild. Paint saves
this cost.
The best paint is the most1
economical in the long run. It
spreads easily saves labor cost.
It fovers a larger area, per gallon
than "cheap" paint.
But rnot important, the best
paint serves five or more years
longer than "cheap" puint.

A Thimble Clew to the
Use of Gas
A Woman' Thimble plays an important
part in the evolution of the
Gas Industry
The use of gas as a cooking medium dates
back just 92 years, when William Murdock,
in a little cottage in Cornwall, England,
used a' punctured thimble to stop up a pipe
conveying gas which he had in his back yard
to the great edification and mystification of
his neighbors. .
