MADISOX. Wis.. April 13. The de
mand of William J. Bryan, made in a
letter recently that President E. A.
.Birge of the Cniversity of Wisconsin
state his views on certain religious
doctrines for the benefit of the tax
payers of Wlseuufciu was answered to
day by President nirge with the state
ment that he did not believe that the
taxpayers "have now designated a
Chautauqua lecturer from Florida to
start a theological grand jury inquiry
of this kind in their names."
Referring to the controversy which
was commenced by Mr. Itryan montjis
ago, when he declared President Uirge
to be an atheist the president tcday
said that Bryan, now- finding that his
charge of atheism will not hold, has
shifted his ground and he now "pro
pounds various theological beliefs and
demands that I state my attitude
toward them for the benefit of the
taxpayers."
, "1 decline to do so," President Hire
said, "since 1 have no reason to think
that the taxpayers desire such infor
mation, even if they had the right to
.ask for it."
