Not long ago a representative of a
motion picture concern with offices
here and a member of a aportlng
goods firm had made a pneumatic
ball, three feet in diameter, which
they preeent'-d to members of Station
It in thin city, with an outline of the
new game.
Eight men. four on a aide, climbed
into their oilskin, t-oupled up four
linea of hose at a playfleld, adjoining
the station, put tho ball in tho center
J of the field between the two team,
i and started to play. The object of
i the game was to force the ball to the
opponent's goal line by means of
stream of water.
Driven by the powerful atreama
from the hose, the ball performed
strange antics, leaping high into the
air and hjirtllng back and forth
aerobe the field to the delight of a
crowd of spectators that had gathered
to watch the new game. The playfleld
was soon a sea of mud and the ref
eree became o waterlogged that hla
whistle died in an inarticulate gurgle.

If ever, il becomes the concern of a
school board .aro question expected
to lie luid before the supreme court of
Kuiu-as, following tho recent action
of Dlstrirt Judge Hugh Moans In sus
taining demurrer of the Vinlund.
Kan wis. rural school board against
his Jurisdiction in an action brought
on behalf ot Alice Hunsen and Mande
I'.ucliunan. Vinlund high school
pupils, bgolnsi the board.
Alice and Maude uro IS years old,
und both are furnicra' daughters.
Court action wua brought by J. K.
Hansen, father of Alice, when the
Vinlund school bourd after adoptinit
n rule requiring pupils to wear skirts
three Inches below the knees, de
cided that the skirts ot Alice and
Maude did not, meet the specifica
tions,' and eatpvtlod them until such
time as their skirts should be lowered.
On application of Mr. Hansen.
Judge Muuna Issued u teniporary
oi-uer directing the school board to
permit the girls to return to their
studies. They did so. without reser
vations or amendments as to skirt
length. Then 'the school board filed
a demurrer to Judge Means' Jurisdic
tion, which tho JudKe upheld, and
Hansen's attorney announced an ap
peal to the supreme 'Court.
1 ho notion of the school board
stirred up a bornota' nest in the usu
ully plueld community of Vinlund.
Supporters of tho school board suid
the board wus. right, and three inches
below the ,kneo wus a liberal allow
ance for skirts. Others, particularly
friends of the girls' mothers, said
they believed Mrs. Hunsen and Mrs,
Uuchunun, who snudo tho coslumea in
quentlon 14 1 borne, knew more about
what was right and modest for girls
to weur than any threo men in tho
county, schupl directors or not.
Judgo Menus wus made the ruclp
