Ye Smudge Pot
By Arthur Perry.
Sir Auckland lu'ddos reticence is refreshing. It indicates a return
to Hritish nomuiley. Ourinsi tlu lust few months there 1ms heen
terrific offensive avrainst the rood old Knirlish tradition of voek
ribhed conservatism.
The British ambassador, while neither heavv nor humorless, has
successfully revived the accepted Hritish type. It is not at all im
probable that this was one of the purposes of his visit.
For Mrs. Asijuith's sojourn was confusing. Unlike the ambassador
she talked about everything from light wines and beers, to shop
g'rl s ankles and 3lrs. Astor. A compatriot of hers. Mrs. Sheridan
the sculptress, did much the same thing, with even less regard for the
ei n vent ions.
Then there was 'YY. L. George who talked about women and sold
books very reminiscent of Hollywood's Hop parties, t. K. Chesterton,
philosophically paradoxical and Sir Oliver Lodge who radiographed
with the world beyond.
What was England coming to asked the provincial I'nele Samuel.
John Hull seemed threatened with purple auras and neurasthenic'
twitches. .
Hut Sir Eric Geddes arrived and proceeded to restore the Anglo
Saxon equilibrium. He bluntly repudiated the Mirrors of Downing
Street and more bluntly refused to gossip, lie dodged the sensa
tional and the shocking, he talked pleasantly but said little.
As an official of his government he has performed a needed serv
ice. The England of today is not the England of ten years ago, but
neither is it an England of feministic freaks and garrulous busy
bodies. It has advanced but it hasn't apparently lost its essential
roast beef fibre.
