that In the more densely populated counties there exists already

Juilpc liOwt'lls decision is eitsy to tnulcrstnmi, owl .vet it is unfor
1'inate for the state, that some man of his calibre, will not load a fight
for a return to common sense and the old-fashioned simre deal.
The jmjitieians, as a whole, arc in a condition of blue funk. Thev
soe a campaign of undere-round polities, with all sorts of sinister
forces involved, and those who aren't secretly working for this under
ground support, are sitting on the fence trying to decide which way to
jump. Most of the newspapers, particularly in Portland, are in the
(Same predicament.
What Oregon needs is some man. regardless of party, with the
courage to take a stand, and fight for what he knows to he right, even
though he bhv hot win, this time, for as sure as the sun rises tomor
row, lie r":st win eventually. .
The isme must he met. Either this is to be a land of freedom and
law anl order, or it isn't to be. Either we are going back to the
principles-of Lincoln and llooscvelt, or on the the principles of I.e
iiine and TroUky. Democracy, true Democracy or UolshevLsm. there
is the question to he determined. ,
Lincoln had the vision, lie opposed slavery when he knew that
opposition meant defeat, and he went down to defeat only to rise
again triumphant. Roosevelt had the vision. He opposed the domi
nation of big business, when his own friends laughed nt hi folly, and
the two times he went down to defeat, lie sacrificed himself for what
he knew to be right. ; ,
We ean't expect another Lincoln or anotltcr Roosevelt just now,
fciore's the pity, but we can expect some honest-to-God two-fisted
citjzeii. with the courage to fight this appeal to racial and religious
prejudice, and there will tye plenty, of good meu and women in this
state to follow him. ' iVVr.-'i

IN JAIL AND OUT.
IT DOfeSXT fill my heart with joy to see a gent in jail; I'm
sorry for the erring boy who's left the narrow trail. Some
day I hope no man will dwell where warders' keys are clinked,
sonie day I hope the prison cell will be a thing extinct. Hut since
vc have our costly jails, t they become, a jest our justice system
sags und fails and law goes galley west. Suspended sentences
obtain, Hiuusing sinful gents, paroles make punishment look vain,
as vain as twenty cents. Xo sooner do we send a man to languish
iu thu pen, than able lawyers work some plan and get him out
again, liiieh day the killers leave their. dead, according to the
dope,' and of a hundred slayers red perhaps one draws a rope.
We turn the vicious hoodlums loose with gentle reprimands, and
then wc wonder why the deuce the crime wave still expands. "We
are too merciful, I fear, and make our law a freak; we sentciiee
sinners 1o a year, and free them in a week. And then they take
their guns and knives, and filled with bootleg gin, they sacrifice
some valued lives, and swell the wave of ftin." And while I fton
tinies bewail the harm that prisons do, I'd like to see such men in
jail, the whole besotted crew.
