Harding and Hughes Confer
On Senate Request for In
formation on Four-Ply Pact
Armed Force Clause Is

President Harding was preparing to
communicate with Secretary Hughe
today regarding the senate reueat for
further information on the four
power Pacific treaty, the senate for
eign relations committee completed
its preliminary reading of all the
arms conference treaties except that
relating to Yap and laid them aside
without action until next week.
No serious opposition was reveal
ed to the general Fas Kastern or Chi
nese tariff pacts wh'ch were read hy
the committee at today's meeting, but
there was considerable discussion of
the provision of the naval limitation
treaty fixing a fortifications ' statu
no" in the Pacific. Committee mem
bers Indicated that they would de
sire the advice of American navaf au
thorities before they acted on the
fortifications article.
Meeting again Monday, the com
mittee is expected to consider the
Yap treaty and perhaps have before
it at the same time the president's
reply to the resolution adopted yes
terday asking for records cf the four
power treaty negotiations. Mr. Hard
ing is understood to have taken steps
to communicate with Secretary
Hughes', who has gone to Bermuda,
after a visit to the White House today

and democrats were said to be lean
ing toward adoption of such a stipula
tion, and all agreed that much de
