Arthur Griffith was one of ' the
founders of the Sinn Fein govern
ment and ljas been among the fore
most loaders directing its activities.
He was formerly an editor at Dublin
and later established the paper Uni
ted Irishmen, followed by the Binn
Fein, and then the Nationality.
In October, 1917, he was elected
presiding officer at the opening of
the Sinn .Fein conference In Dublin.
Xuring the peace conference at Paris
Lu 1919 be was chosen as an Irish
delegate, to go to Farls aad present

America was attributed to Griffith's
imprisonment as' Mr. DeValera on hi
return resumed the active direction
of Sinn Fein affairs. Early in June
last there were reports cf a Londou
conference-to' which Irish leaders

from' prison followed on June 21,

gon against the Illicit traffic In nar
eotcs are being formulated here to
day by Governor Oleott and members
of the state boards ot health and
pbarmaet In Joint conference.
Frank S. Ward, secretary of tho
pharmacy board, and Dr, Frederick
Strieker, secretary of. the board of
health, have both prepared reports on
the sale and use of narcotics in Ore
gon at . tbe request of Governor Ol
eott, -and the discussions here are
centering around these reports.
Today's conferences are In the na
ture of a preliminary session to a
meeting in Portland tomorrow, to
which Governor Oleott has invited
public officials from all parts of the
state who are interested in suppres
sion of the drug traffic.

Crater Lake, highway, which will be
under tho direction of the federal
post road authorities, with the expen
ditures divided between the state and
federal authorities. Government and
state engineers recently made a Bur
vey, for the purposu of calling for
bids. -

xtandard grade, and slightly narrower
than standard.
