Thomas, of .Medford, who spoke, at the
weekly luncheon of the chamber of
commerce this noon.
Mr. Thomas has had a wide exper
ience in the development of irriati'ii
projects In southern Oregon, having
represented three Jackson county pro
jects In their formative period, and he
told his audience today that there was
work for every man to do in putting
such a project as the one here into
commission. And be started right in
at the ground floor by calling for the
"stpture deal" when he purchaser and
prospective settler appeared upon the
ground: then he urgt-d tltat assistance,
financial if need be. be offered the
home builder, and that his problems o:
production and of marketing be made
the problems of the community.
.Senator Thomas referred to another
community where the fanner had been
bellied In the building up of a dairy
herd, and he urged that much atten
tion be given to the dairy Industry in
the building up of southern Oregon
projects. He told of the offer made by
institutions in the north to contract
for a period of, years for certain berry
crops and of the assurance that the
great firm of Libby. McNeil and Llbby
would establish a plant here when
Irrigation had assured sufficient pro
duction of certain varieties of crops.
Ho urged that outlet through such
sources was more to be sought than
the establishment of smaller communi
ty canneries which would have to de
velop their own markets, the market
as he noted, being as essential and
often more difficult than the produc
tion.. Mr. Thomas was most optimistic
over tho results of irrigation In the
IloKue lliver valley, and predicted that
it would become the Kden of the coun
try when once It had been brought
under production.
Ralph P. Cowgill, project engineer
of the Medford district, also present
at the luncheon, predicted that the
granite soils would some day hold the
production records of the valley and
noted his own experience with a farm
developed from the purest of granite.
Ills yields of alfalfa were the best ill
the upper valley districts, while veg
etables and fruits were equal to the
best. His farm had, in fact, become a
show- place of tho Medford district.
