he has one of the largest food busi
nesses in the city, conductinK a mar
ket in a former theater on the pub
lic square.
ITis advertising methods frequently
startled the city. Ho did not con
fine his copy to the selling of pota
toes and onions, but discussed almost
every question of public importance.
Mrs. Oles assisted the mayor-elect
in his whirlwind campaign and ob
servers assign to her much of the
credit for its success. They inaugu
rated a plan of political meetings for
women, from which all men were ex
cluded. At all meetings, Oles, who

the stage with arms in air, shouting
'here I am! Vote for Oles!"
Mr. Oles has announced ho will ap
point his safety director without con
sulting the appointee.

Sallie Hunter, a Red Cross nurse, who
lives with her parents In an East Side
flat, was rovealed by intimate friends.
Mrs. Oliver Harriman, a sister-in-law
of the bridegroom, verified the en
gagement and said she had received
Miss Hunter at her home just before
the young woman left for French Lick
Springs, Ind. Mr. Harriman has been
at the Indiana resort for several
weeks, llefore her departure MiBS
Hunter Invited a few of her friends to
the homo of her parents... When Miss
Hunter confided that she was about to
start west to marry a millionaire
everyone thought it was a joke. The
marriage, a real love match, had its
inception in the war period. Harriman,
an army captain, met Miss Hunter
while she was serving as a Red Cross
nurse. They met again on their return
to this country, but only casually. Sev

The most unique case ever filed in the
history of tho northwest, according to
local attorneys, was instituted yester
day at Pasco, Franklin county, Wash.,
by Mike Hoca In suing IiIb former part
ner, John Edwards for $39 to cover
the cost of attorney's fees ami costs
which were paid by Hoca when the
latter was recently arrested and fined
$175 for having intoxicating liquor in
his possession.
Boca alleges in his complaint that
ho and Edwards entered into an agree
ment when they wont Into tho bootleg
ging business that each partner would
bo responsible for half of the costs In
the event that the other partner was
arrested. After Hoca's arrest, ho
pleaded guilty and was fined, which
together with his attorney foe amount
ed to $19S. Half of this amount, Hoca
alleges, should bo paid by Edwards
according to a written agreement
made prior to their entorlng into tho
bootlegging business.
Under the community proporty laws
of Washington Mrs. Edwards is mado
a parly to the suit.

SALEM, Ore., Nov. 10. Fire losses
in Oregon for the month of October ag
gregated a loss of $170,515, according
to the monthly report of A. C. llarber,
state fire marshal. The most impor
tant losses in the state were:
At linker, warehouse, elevator and
contents $35,000; at Dandon, theater,
lodge room and contents $15,000; at
Junction City, store and part of con
tents $13,000; at Medford, apartment
house $30,000; at Union, planing mill
$18,000. , . n
The total number of fires was thirty.
SPOKANE, Nov. 10. A man be
lieved to be William Ity, a farmer,
was found on an outlying street to
day, with two bullet wounds in his
body and suffLM-Ing from exposure.
Chances for bis recovery are believed
to bo slight.
A cheap revolver was found near
him and the ground showed signs of
a struggle. Ills watch was missing
and only a few cents were found in
his pockets. Police said bis Injuries
could not have been self-inflicted.
U. S. Steel Tonnage Drops
NEW YORK, Nov. 10. Tile monthly
tonnage report of the United States
Steel corimrntion, made public today,
showed 4,286,82ft tons of unfilled or
ders on hand October 31. This is a de
cline from unfilled orders on Septem
ber 30, which were 4.5C1.G70.
