WE HAVE been requested to mention a mass meeting of the
Non-Partisan league at Portland November 15th at the La
bor Temple.
The request is .'ranted. We trust there will be a large Catherine;
on hand, and a complete expositi"ii of what the Non-l'artisan league
is and what it has dime.
Among the items on the fiiremla. arc the following:
Should the co-operators control the political state?
Why is it necessary for the producer to control the industrial gov
i i iimeut '
(.'an the fanner and laJior organizations depend upon lobbying for
b'gislation ?
Why should the farmer pay a membership fee in the league?
The following answers are suggested:
No.
It isn't.
Tin y can.
He shollldll 't.
Tin- proof of the pudding is the eating the proof of the futility of
communism, liussian or North Dakota brand, are the conditions in
iiussia and North Dakota today.
The people of North Dakota have recalled their non-partisan
leader: the bolsheviki of Kussiu have only been able to retain control,
because of the general prostration of their country, and a complete
repudiation of their original communistic program.
What better proof could any sane person have, that- the radical
panacea won't work, that the long-haired political agitator, even
granting his sincerity, passes out promises which he can't fulfill ?
No one can blame workers, agricultural or industrial, for a desire
lo heller their condition. This ambition has been the motive force in
American progress since the Pilgrims landed on the rock-bound coast.
lint the plainest lesson in human experience today, is that better
ment can only come, through evolution, not revolution, that granting
the imperfections of tin- svstem we have, its perpetuation is prefer
able to its destruction, when there is no workable system to take its
l;u
We have no quarrel with those who favor a Non-Partisan muss
meeting in Portland. This is a free country. The man who believes in
Non-Partisanship as practiced in North Dakota, has as much right to
be heard, as the man who believes in Dowieism or Voodooism or any
( ther ism.
Let the Non-Partisan crusaders be heard. If they tell the truth
no harm can be done, if they don't tell the Irulh. only the easy marks
can be deluded. And we have yet to be convinced there are any
more easy marks in Oregon, than in any other part of the country, not
overlooking our present shiring example. North Dakola.
