tation conference, which may mark Hie beginning of world ptace.
It is, therefore, a week of whole hearted rejoicing, on one hand;
and of solemn consecration on Ihe other. Toward the furtherance of
eace, the churches of the world have united upon a period of prayer.
The Archbishop of Canterbury has prepared a priivcr, in fact, which
lie considers meet for the occassion.
There will be many to scoff at the efficacy of this procedure. Head
ing the list will be the Holsheviki government, wliieh has officially
announced its refusal to be bound by the decisions of the arms parley,
mid which has long since abolished prayer from its curriculum.
"J'rayer," says Lcniiie. "is weakness. It is a survival of
medieval ignorance and superstition. The strong man doesn't
pray, lie acts. The church is the last stronghold of oppres
sion.' It must go, if man is to be free."
liCnine is not ;ilone in his opinion. There are thousands of people
who accept li is materialistic code, without his courage to proclaim it.
Hut the fact remains, the masses of Russia still kneel before their
altars, and in spite of this golden age of materialism, millions through
out the world still find comfort and strength in that spiritual com
munion, which is the living force of prayer.
And perhaps, after all, prayer is what this Washington conference
particularly needs. That is to say, unless the spiritual faith and
force, latent in humanity .regardless of cult or creed, is called upon;
unless factors which transcend the mere impedimenta of diplomatic
barter and trade, are utilized, there' seems little hope that the limita
tion conference, will contribute any more to the betterment of the
world than its many predecessors.
For sooner or later every thoughtful person conies to the realiza
tion that there is more in this world than can be scheduled on a cash
register. Call it what one will, there is above everything and behind
everything, a supreme force, which determines human destiny, re
gardless of how human agencies may struggle to prevent it.
Isn't there justification, therefore, for the hope that if this im
ponderable element is utilized, what appears from a materialistic
.standpoint merely a repetition of the old futile game, may be ele
vated to the plana of genuine achievement? We believe there is.
And because of that belief, we find in this program of prayer, not
another evidence of sanctimonious futility, but the basis of a faith,
that the human spirit has been at last. aroused, unci may; well be tho
salvation of the Washington conference.
