N extraordinary thing lias happened. Certain newspapers in Ore
gon are actually saying something nice ahoiit the railroads. . Iu
Koscburg, Kugone, .Marslii'ielil, McMiiinvillo, Lebanon and other rail-J
road division points, there have been newspaper articles recently, I
urging the people to stop'patronijiing motor busses and inotor trucks,
and tlirow their support to the Vailroads.
The Portland Telegram is now engaged iu an aggressive campaign
showing the rapid destruction of the paved highways by the heavy
motor trucks, which are seriously reducing the freight tonnage of
railroad lines in this state. It really begins to look as though tha
worm, planted in (he soil of public opinion, when railroads owned
state legislatures and charged all the traffic would bear, was begin
iiing lo turn.
The people of the stale, particularly in the railroad centers, where
railroad prosperity is a material factor in local prosperity, are at last
realizing certain important facts. One is that the Southern Pacific
iiud Hill lines in this state pay taxes of about a million and a half dol
lars a year. The pay rolls and material, purchases of the railroads
mount fo hundreds of thousands of dollars annually. Obviously if
the railroads should be forced, out of business by motor compel itiou-p
or their financial health seriously impaired the entire state and par
ticularly these railroad centers would suffer a disastrous blow.
As President Sproulc of the Southern Pacific told the .American
bankers at their convention in hos Angeles the other day:
"The railroads mo heiiiK taxed to build and maintain highways and
the highway are being broken down by the pounding of motor trucks and
motor busses. . When the absurdity becomes manifest of build
ing highways at public expense for competing carriers ' to use free as .
against Invested money of hundreds of thousands of citizens who have
put their money iu good faith into the railroads the country
will he In u -position to start on a neweurreer of business expansion."
There is1 something in this although President Sproulc could not
be considered an impartial, witness. And something must "soon be
done, if the public welfare is to be properly protected. If the motor
bus and motor (ruck form a natural evolution of transportation

will from motives of self-iuterest insist, upon a square deal for the
railroads on one hand ami a square .deal for the people on'the other.
The latter demand will involve some prompt arrangement by
which the -people, who build the permanent, highways, may be prop
erly compensated h.v the commercial motor trucks and 'motor busses
that profit by them. . .
