SWEETEST DAY
OF ALLTHE YEAR
. "The Sweetest Day of the Year" is
tomorrow, Saturday. It Is an ideal day
for everybody from the kiddies to the
grown-ups, and it is to be hoped no
one will be slighted.
Although we have numerous na
tional holidays, there are none that
have the peculiar appeal of Candy Day.
Most of them have a political, relig
ious or sentimental background and
practically all of them are specific
rather than general In their purpose.
Candy Day, on the other hand. Is
to be everybody's day and for that
purpose, no less than because it- is tu
be observed by gifts of candy, it has
been designated "The Sweetest Day
of the Year." It is proposed to set k
apart .".s the one great day on which
no member of the family shall be for
gotten. Everybody likes candy. The
tired housewife brightens into a flash
of half forgotten youthfulness when
hubby hands her a box of candy pos
sibly the first he has remembered to
bring her In months. The sweetheart
expects it. The children grow frantic
In their appreciation of it. Father him
self is by no means immune from the
hunger of a "sweettooth." Everybody
likes it, and everybody Is pleased with
the loving rememberance the gift im
plies. It involves not extravagance. Candy
Is an inexpensive gift. Candy Day will
work no hardship on even a slender
purse. It will spread rejoicing broad
cast; for its observance will become a
ritual of love and good will justifying
the appellation already bestowed upon
it, "The Sweetest Day of the Year,"
tomorrow.
The live-wire Medford firms adver
tising their choice candies are the
Medford Candy company and the Val
ley Candy company, whose products
are sold at the Medford stores as well
as the other stores in the county, and
The Shasta, DeVoe's, Cozy Nook,
Sugar Bowl and H. E. Marsh, some are
making special prices for this day and
all have choice candies at right prices.
Look at their ads and buy sweet
hearts, sister, mother, grandmother,
brother and even dad some candy on
this day.

TALENT STATION
TALENT, Ore., Oct. 6. The South
ern Oregon Experiment Station now
has fruiting a very large and improved
Petite or French prune which should
be seen by everyone interested in this
fruit. The prune growers of this val
ley and also the experiment station
have found that the French prune is
tho most productive of all prunes in
the Rogue River valley. The only ob
jection to the standard type of this
variety Is its small size. For this rea
son prune growers have been hoping
that an improved or larger type of this
prune would be produced.
In February, 1911, Prof. Reimer vis
ited tho prune district around Sarato
ga, California, and found that a single
branch had appeared on a normal
French prune which bore fruit twice
as large as tho remainder of the tree
and the surrounding trees. Scions of
this new type were procured and graft
ed into a standard prune tree at the
Experiment Station near Talent. Those
have now produced three crops, and
every year the fruit on this new type
has boon twice as large as (he fruit on
the reinaiuder of the tree.
This is just what the prune growers
have been looking for ever since the
famous French prune was first Intro
duced many years ago. It marks a
new epoch in the prune industry of
Oregon and the Pacific coast. This
new type is as large as the Italian
jprune and far more productive and
much sweeter than that variety.
Tile fruit growers of tho valley are
invited to come to the Experiment
