of the community clubhouse, in aid of
which public spirited movement the
Civic Improvement club is at present
more than actively engaged. On Tues
day afternoon of this eJi at a rally
gathering of the club a lot of activities
were outlined to help the project along

the community endeavor for the build
ing of a "homey" comfort station. The

BUTTE FALLS, Oct. 7. On the
opening of the Butte Falls schools,
Sept. 12, the attendance was more
than one hundred per1 cent more than
it was a year ago. During the sum
mer many improvements were made
on the school grounds and buildings,
such as instalment of ladder, teeter
uoards, traveling rings, sand table,
swings and other apparatus. Interior

Tuesday evening. Sept. 20, the upper
classmen of the Butte Falls high
school gave a reception to B. F. Rooks
or class of 1925.
A court was called in which Mr.
Ward, the eighth grade teacher, and
Mr. Lowe, tile principal of the high
school took turns presiding. The Frosh
were called before the court, one by
one and' tried for numerous crimes
such as attempting to grow a mus
tache, being out after curfew, painting
freckles, speeding and winking. They
were found guilty of ail charges and
each received a sentence to do certain
things.
After the trial a small program was
given and refreshments were served,
and then after a few games were
played the frosh were told that it was
time .they were in bed and they left.
The frosh do not show any effects of
the initiation except being a bit timid
of the rest of the school.
Mr. Ward, athletic coach, held a
meeting Monday, Oct. 3rd and organ
ized the basket ball team for the year.
Mr. Ernest Albert was elected captain
and Cecil Alilstrom manager. A con
secutive schedule for games in the
valley is being arranged. The outlook
for athletics is very promising.
A very pleasing nnd well attended
reception was given the teachers at
Butte Falls, Sept. 30. A good musical
and literary program was rendered
after which refreshments and games
were had.
Uev. Mr. Hulit, Sunday school mis
sionary was at Butte Falls on Sunday,
Oct. 2, addressing (he Sunday school
in the morning and preaching at night.
Ho went to Derby in the afternoon
and organized a Sunday school there.
A reception for the teachers at the
assembly hall was held last Friday
evening and an unusually large crowd
was in attendance, the program was
principally made up of music. Prof.
Lowe gave a short talk on-tho four
principal parts of a successful school,
which weru the proper equipments
for tho school work, the eornoration
uf the parents, obedient and energetic
scholars, and last, but not least, the
teachers. Light refreshments wore
served, and as the remark was made
several times there, I will repeat It
again. Uutto Falls is noted for her
fine paslry cooks, and willingness of
ill to help in the school work.

in a formal way that they will re

urday evening was quite an enjoyable
affair, and the crowd was m rst too

Mr. Everett At-holt returned to
Weed Tuesday, after a week spent
with her mother, Mrs. Herreferd.

their annual carnival and dance at
their club house Saturduy evening,
Oct. 8. Great preparations are being
made by the club members to make
this annual event a great success. The
decorating committee are at work un.l

Good eats will be served during tho
whole evening, the music will bo extra
good and a big time is assured. The
grand prize will be a liugu turkey.
Chances will be sold on all kinds of
farm produce, chickens galore, home
made cakes, etie.

Mr. and Mrs. Geo. S. Mnllt-son, their
son Chester and Mrs. Matteson's motlP
er, Mrs. McLean arrived Tuesday by
auto from their home at Enderlin, N
Dak., for a visit with Mr. and Mrs. G.
B. Alden. Mr Matteson is a brother
of Mrs. Alden. They were just a month
on the road and had a very enjoyable
trip.
Mr. and Mrs. D. H. Slead were Med
ford visitors Wednesday.
Mr. and Mrs. C. P. Cbamplin and
Mrs. Beatrice C. Jonns wero business
visitors in Medford Wednesday after

for the year Thursday afternoon. An

ments have moved back to their ranch
homo until the apartments are ready
for occupancy.
Mr. and Mrs. C. C. Furnas who were
also residents at the Barnum accom
panied them until they can make ar
rangements for a home in Medford.
Lee Raymond enjoyed a visit from
his father last week. He was enrouto
from his ranch at Walla Walla to his
home at Medford.
Last Wednisday evening marked
one of the pleasantest events in tho
history of the community of Phoenix.
This event was the reception of the
teachers by the parents and friends of
the schools. Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Cul
ver's beautiful homo was given freely
for the occasion. Tho program was
full of excellent music, a good social
time and refreshments followed.
The high school has the honor of re
ceiving the prize for the best display
of work done during last year at tho
fair conducted by Miss Humes, the
county superintendent at Medford.
The girls' baseball team played the
Talent team last week on the Phoenix
field. The game was the first of the
season. The interest and good spirit
were manifested throughout. Talent
won by a few points.
The boys are busy this week clean
ing up the grounds for a soccer, field
hoping to get busy learning how to
meet the other schools in the sport.
The upper classes initiated the
freshman class last Friday evening.
After being whirled through several
interesting stunts, their nerves were
cooled down with ice cream and cake.
Monday morning all were at school
safe and sound.
There seems to be a fine crop of
potatoes In general this year. The
farmers aro all busy digging and
hauling them out to town.
Messrs. Hoyt and Yokam from
Washington were visiting at the
Peyton ranch Tuesday and Wednes
day. Carl Richardson tool; a load
of
spuds to the valley Wednesday.
Mr.
Richardson Is building a small cot
tage on the river above Evergreen
ranch. Mrs. Richardson is teaching
the Flounce Rock school.
Ralph Peyton took a loa . ot
spuds out Tuesday, returning the
same day. Mr. Wm. Lewis came back
with him.
Roy Vaughn left for Medford Wed
nesday. Mr. Clark is hauling spuds to town
from tho Peyton ranch this week.
Mr. and Mrs. Lawson and children
motored to Medford and Central
Point Friday to spend the week end.
Mrs. Roy Vaughn ha3 returned
from visiting her parents on Elk
creek.
