WALTER l'MTCIIAHD KATOX, the well known author, comes
to Medford nt an opportune: (limit. This is more than can
Ijo said of his literary predecessors.
About ten years ago Kmerson fon;di honored lis. He arrived at
the tail end of a boom. Ueing a conscientious scrihe, he described
things as he saw them, iiicludiiiff some observations on the liisr red
apple. When his story came out in the' Saturday Evening I'ost there
was a great line and cry hereabouts, and the noted author and Ins
Magazine were figuratively burned in effigy.
Then a few years later Jrvin Cobb arrived. The commercial boom
had been replaced by a political boom. The night he gave a talk at
the J'age, (here was a Lincoln day banquet at the Medford. Mr.
Cobb was invited, lint he declined, illness was given as the cause,
ihe general assumption local I v being that tile famous humorist was
not ill, but feared be would be if he, a good Southern Democrat,
should attend a !. O. I', banquet. !It was even intimated that Mr.
Cobb declined the invitation because there was no money in it.
Mr. Colli) was naturally very much aggrieved and so were many
people in Medford, the net result being unfortunate from every one's
.standpoint.
Hut Mr. Katon arrives at the proper psychological moment. There
is no boom flowing or ebbing. Medford and the liogue Kiver Valley
are enjoying excellent health. The artificial hoi air has gone, tbe
passion for bunk has passed, conditions arc fundamentally loo good
to be spoiled by the slightest misrepresentation. Southern Oregon is
aching for publicity and merely asks that the writers describe condi
tions just as they are, for they rouldn'1 ho very much better.
And there is no political boom raging. Polities lire conspicuous by
their absence. There is no possible chance of our honored visitor get
ting enmeshed in a web of partisanship.
So everyone is glad Air. Katon has come, and everyone hopes he
vill be glad also. Crater Lake is our supreme summer attraction and
Crater Lake is where he is going. Alcdl'ord offers him the keys of
the eily while he is here, anil best wishes for a successful journey
when he departs.

THE SUCKERS
1 dn
UK sucker falls for every scheme, believes in everv honjuinl
am, and nothing puis him wise; nil hough he's warned In
voices shrill, the sucker is a sucker still, and will be till he dies.
"A million plutes have hoarded beans, and ride around in limou
sines, and suckers pay the freight ;. plutes say, when sizing up
their kale, '.'The sucker crop (tan never fail, and. life is simply
great." The suckers toil at, grievous tasks, anil save the coin in
kegs and casks, and should lie wearing bells; but lio, I hey say,
"We'll get. rich quick," and. go and buy the gilded bricks some
tinhorn faker sells. They have no use for banks, l hey say, and
hide their money in the hay, or 'neatli the cellar floor; then some
one finds the treasure hole, find bears away the hard earned roll,
and brings il back lio more. ' The suckers patronize the seers who
tell them of Ihe future years; and what shall them befall; and
when they're sick they take their rocks and hand them to the i'ak-
ing docs who travel on their gall. You cannot change the sucker's
heart; he thinks he is so blooming smart, he scorns your good ad
vice; he thinks your counsel trite and stale, and all the sharks get
on his trail, and touch him for the price.-
