HE director of llic New York State Income Tax lnirfiiu reports
that in anditnt; "J.i.OfM'l return for last vear it was found
liiat 3u',0(Kl people hinl not paid as much as tliey should, ami they were
ansessed aildit ional amoiiiitK accordingly. At the same time it was
found that 22,000 had paid too much, and they were jjiveii refund
cheeks. The director is convieed tlutt in many other cases the. tax
payers paid too much, hut the facts were not clear enough to warrant a
refund.
Other officials connected with the state and federal income tax
departments fierce that in paying these unpopular taxes, the puhlie
shows a much higher decree of honesty than cynics are accustomed
to give it credit for. The plain fact appears to he, its shown hy this
and many other tests, that the it venire person is not naturally dis
honest, hut naturally honest.
This is exactly what injilit have Veil concluded Jiy the execise
of ordinary common sense, without reference to statistical figures.
Society holds together pretty well; and does Imsiness right aloiii with
little interruption; nnd it is honesty that holds it together and makes
the personal bonds and business arrangements possible. If people
were more dishonest than honest, society wfuiltl immediately fall to
pieces.
It is reported that GO.OOO people will attend the Dempsey-Curpen-tier
mill. Why don't they count the special newspaper correspon
dents nnd make a real showing.
Any alliance between fireat Britain and Japan would be n calam
ity at this time. Some of the best men in England are fighting it.
Ilere's hoping they win.
Mr. Stillman is reported to be worth $50,000,000. His lawyers.
however, are doing all they can to reduce the prejudice which exists
against the permanent possession of such wealth.
