Monday evening, the chances for a
fair this fall or for the improvement
of the fair grounds will be very slim.
Unlike the call for most special
elections where a certain percentage
of voters at the last general election
can petition tor a special fair improve
ment election, the county attorney ren
dered an opinion for tho Farm Utneau
that it was necessary to secure the
names of 15 per cent of the total regis
tered voters. There are 10,531 regis
tered voters in Jackson county and the
names of 15S0 are necessary to call
this election for county fair improve
ment. At the present time 913 voters
have signed the' petition but thore re
mains 007 to be secured before the
county authorities may order the elec
tion. Unless tho voters of Jackson county
volunteer their signatures to tho peti
tions there will be no fair this fall, as
the fair grounds cannot bo made ready
for same. A petition Is on file at the
Chamber of Commerce rooms.

James J. Jeffries, the ponderous Cnli
forniau, on June 9, 1S99 at Coney Is
land. Jeffries had graduated from n

mission In 11 rounds, scoring three
knockdowns before the knockout.
Jeffries moved cautiously In the
ring until his ire was aroused where
upon ho would crento a thunderbolt
with one of his fists. The first knock
down was in the second roud.
Eitzsliumons' whirlwind attack
tired him and in the tenth round Jer
ries knocked him down twice. In the
next round the California! landed a
zipping drive over the champion's
heart and followed it through with
rights and lefts to the jaw. Those
blows dazed Eltzsimmons and Jef
fries sent him down for the full
county with a crushing right-hand
blow to the chin.
