A BRAVE MAN
EVERYONE ndiiiires connive. -And eoiira-ie. (j'-'iiiine courage
is rare. It was liernard Shaw who said all lnon eoultl lie di
vided into two elasses, eowards and liars, the cowards told the truth,
(he liars, who proclaimed their fearlessness, didn't. And the milhor
of "Candida" proceeded to show that not love, but fear made the
v.orld fso round.
Therefore, a cenninely brave man in public life, deserves mention.
And such a man is tiovernor llnxh M. Horsey of kieorffia. Governor
Horsey lias started out to tfive the colored man in his state a scpinre
deal. It is, as far as we know, the first instance of a Southern Gov
ernor taking such a stand. Anyone with the slightest knowledge of
race feeling in the south, knows that such action requires the highest j
and rarest (piality of moral and physical courage.
The recent convictions of Georgia planters for murder and espi
onage were the result of Governor Dorsey's courageous leadership.
recently he published a "Jilaek Hook" which gives a circumstantial j
list of outrages and persecutions of negroes in some twenty-five coun
ties in his state.
,
Naturally a storm of denunciation and abuse has broken over the
Governor's head. He is called a "nigger governor." a corn fed demagogue-,
an inciter of bloodshed and rebellion, and threats of impeach
ment have been openly made.
IJut lhe Governor has stuck to his guns. Mure than that he has
carried warfare into the enemies' camp. In reply to an attack by a
certain Judge Searcy of the Circuit Court, who was responsible for
a flagrant ease of negro persecution, the Governor said "If the negro
in question was sent to the chain gang or fined one cent, the court
houses of Georgia ought to be torn down."
And in spite of the trtsmendous obstacle of race hatred, which in
any colored belt is such an overwhelming force, Governor Dorsey is
gaining ground. His support naturally does not come from the col
ored population, for in such a crisis their support is negligible, but
from the best white citizenship in t.he state, the men and women,
who recognize that the treatment of the colored people in KJeorgia has
been a scandal and disgrace, and are determined to purge the record,
not so much for the sake of the colored people, as for the sake of their
rwn stale.
Kroni this distance it doesn't seeiu possible that Governor Dorsey
could win. Hut whether he wins or loses, his spirit like lhe. spirit of
John Mrown, must go marching on. For he is eternally right, and
eventually the. right must prevail. Meanwhile, with hatred, discord
and strife so prevalent throughout the world, there is an inspiration
in the example or this sti g hearted I'earlcss man, which should be
an unending inspiration to his country and to (he-world.

HELPFUL EXERCISE.
I USED to sit in pomp and state and look no exercise, and I
achieved such grievous weight I pained the doctor's eyes.
Twas very little grub I ate, my appetite unsound; but every bite
increased my weight three quarters of n pound. And I hen I heard
the doctor say, ''You surely lard the earth; you'll have to walk
twelve miles n day, and thus cut; down your girth." So I put on
my nine-league, boots, and walked till I was lanie, although I
never cared, three hoots for walking as a game. Itut one must
heed whatever rules the. doctors may invent, whatever sort of
'pat hie schools those does may represent. And so I walked
along the shore about a hundred miles and then J walked- a
hundred more, in nil the ragtime styles. The first result of all
this toil was appetite renewed; the women had to fry and boil
great, quantities of food. My appelite was strange and weird, it
clamored still for more; the loaves and fishes disappeared, and all
the larder's store. My weight increased by leaps and bounds,
by bounds and leaps it grew, and where I used to gain two pounds
I nmv gain twenty-two. The fat man fails in all he does, in all
the schemes he tries, and alecks always round him buzz, and talk
of exercise.
