statement made public here today by

reserve agent.
"In the district Kenernlly,"-lhe Ktnto
ment said, "the number of building
permits was 4S.9 per cent larper than
in April 1920 and their vulne 27.4 pel
cent greater. The smaller increase In
value of permits is doubtless due to
decreased building costs, which are
estimated to be from X .to 50 per cent
less than they were a year aso."
Regarding winter wheat, the state
ment said Its condition in (he district
May 1 was slightly above the ten year
average, and predicted a total produc
tion of llC.liS 1,0011 bushels if average
conditions prevail until harvest time,
compared with fS,0,r9,000 bushels for
11120. There Is an abandoned acreage
of L'S per cent In California and 10 per
cent in Arizona.
More -than a seasonal improvement
of activity was reported in tho state
ment for the district's lumber Indus
try. Seventy-five per cent of the mills
are now operating, it was declared,
compared to 40 to HO per cent earlier
in tlie year, and demand for nearly all
grades of lumber is reported Increasing.

state declared, "was reported to be

Press.) Prime Minister Lloyd OeorKe
announced in -the house of commons

that a statement would be made to
parliament ' on the subject when the
arrangements were completed.
Replying to a -question, as to wheth
er the government would adopt the
suggestion of 'colonial autonomy for
north and south Ireland and have the
apportionment of the naflonal deht
submitted to judicial arbitration, Mr.
Lloyd George said that even If parlia
ment approved such proceeding "I
have reason to believe it would not he
accepted by the men responsible for
tile violence In Ireland."
The prime minister said there could
be no question of making good out of
the Hritlsh exchequer the damage to
the Dublin custom house caused hy the
recent incendiary incident In that
building. He asserted the building
was deliberately destroyed by Sinn
I-'elners.

here last evening shortly before the
curfew hour. Stone throwing and
shooting occurred between civilian!

young women, the civilians trying to
separate the girls from their military
escorts. Several of the combatants
were wounded.
A fatal shooting occurred in Angel-
sea street, where a -grocer's assistant
was shot In the chest and diod shortly
