THE CRUSADING SPIRIT.
PRESIDENT HANDING denies America went into tlie war with
u friiKiidintr spirit. -There whh, he kiivh, no time for altruism.
And jet he doehu-es Amcriea fotij-'ht with no thought of selfish bene
fit, with no hope of material gain. . '
We fail to see how these two. statements can he reconciled.'- To
face death for an ideal, is to face death in the criisadinn spirit. To
light for freedom 'is to fight for the principle of democracy. To
enter war and wage war, not for selfish advantage, not for' ma
terial gain, hut for the perpetuation of the right, is essentially altru
istic, n ' -- ..
We have never lieen aide to follow this fine of reasoning, first pro
mulgated hy Ambassador Harvey, which .ould place American par-'
ticipalion in the war on the low plane of,. physical reaction, merely
ji slap at (I'cniiuny because (iennany slapped us.
-
Granting that the primary cause of our entering the war was (fer
luany's allack on American rights, who can deny there was some
thing else, that throughout the country as a whole, there was a feel
ing which existed before that violation, a feeling' that Germany rep
resented a principle that was wrong and that if the world, was ever
',i be a safe place to live in, that principje had to be beaten down and
destroyed. . ' v , , '
That is not to say that the American doughboy as he went over
the lop. evolved a vision of political idealism, or thought the matter
out at all; but it does mean, we believe, that America's spirit in this
v. ar was different from the spirit of any other nation in the "war. It,
was more than retaliation, it was something very fine, something very
liigli; aucj we have never found a teijm that better represented it, than1
to call it the spirit of the old crusaders. "

LEAVING IT.
BY DOIHi'KS and hitches, by labor or fraud, we gather up
riches, an elegant wad; the roll we are showing has made
life it grind; and then when we're going we leave it behind; Ah.
that is the dii-ki'iis, the sting and the smart I It saddens anil
sickens the miserly heart. To leave aU. thc plunder for others to
blow! What marvel, what wonder we wail in our woe? The
short-sighted niggard saves till he must die, and I will be jiggered
if I can see why; ainusi'lliiiiijgietoilges, all flip he 'escheSis.raiid .
drearily lodges down thereby flic mews; to harvest n nickel his
form he'll exhaust'; his life is a pickle, a fluke and a frost. In
eol'l'erj he's stowing all coin lic.cnYt find, and then when lie's gifing
lit) I en ves it behind. The.last of hi journeys has boruo, him abroad
and gifted attorneys camp down on his wad.". And wastrels .and
spenders, his heirs and their kin, for frivolous splendors dispose
of his tin. So it is with grieving the tightwads depart, their large
bundles leaving the joy of each heart. Hut over the river no
bundles are known, no miser hearts quiver at sight of a bone.
Some silvery pieces I've salted away, to comfort, my niece when
,1'm in the clay; but not in my keeping such treasure you'll find,
that I might be weeping to leave it behind.

He banked his Money;
- He became a Partner
Big business men are always on the lookout for young men
who have qualifications for big positions. The main thing
they want to know is: "has he MONEY SENSE?'' That ques
tion can only be answered in one vay : by a Pass Book showing
REGULAR deposits. The routine of the business a man can be
taught, :but the value of money he must learn for himself with
his own money. '.
If you haven't yet started to regularly deposit some of your
money, come in and open an account and start. You will be on
the road to prosperity when you do.
