IN MEMORIAM.
MEDFORD today is paying honor to two of lir sons who were
killed in action on the battlefields of France. One approaches
such an occasion with mixed emotions, first and foremost, a jenuiin'
and heartfelt sympathy for those near to these two men, the friends
and relatives, who have suffered a personal loss, the poignancy of
which no words ciui alleviate; and second, a solemn pride in which
the entire community shares. which in a sense translates that feeling
of pricf, into a certain exaltation, almost a rratitndc that Medford
can claim these two yotnifr men as her own.
The first emotion is personal and then-fore sacred, upon the pri
vacy of which one hesitates to intrude; but the second emotion is im
personal, in a sense, the possession of all. and it is the latter sentiment,
of which the ceremonies today, are an expression.
To slightly paraphrase Lincoln's ( I'ettyshnrg address:
The world will little note, nor long remember what we
say here, but it can never forget what they did there. It is
rather for us fo be here dedicated to the unfinished work
which they so nobly advanced. It is rather for
us to be hen- dedicated to the great ask remaining before us.
that from these honored dead we take increased devotion
to that cause for which they gave the last measure of devo- '
lion, that we hen- highly resolve that these dead shall not
have died ill vain. that this nation under Cod, shall have a
new birth of fredom. and that government f the people.
by the pie, and for the people shall not perish from the
earth."
What Lincoln said I lien of the Civil War, is true today of the great
world war. and it is death not as a horror, but as an inspiration, not
as a symbol of loss, but a symbol of supreme achievement which
these two young men have bequeathed to this community anil for
which this community can never adeipialely repay them.

N the death of Franklin K. Lane the country loses one of its best
beloved and most useful citizens, "lie was essentially a man o!
fair mind and kind heart." An idealist without sentimentality, a man
of action, but never a man of violence, his first words al'ler he came
out of the anacsthclic, form his perfect epitaph, "I am surprised to
lie alive. I hope to be able to live a long life, iloing good things for
others, without thought of money."
There was Franklin K. Lane, a Canadian by birlh, an American by
nature and instinct, I'liselfishly disinterested, doing good things for1
others, and for his adopted country, all his life.

K can all enntributy dally to t')l Normalcy's return, if we
do our labors gn. ly, at the anvil or the churn, if we unit
ill-nalurcd talking and put up a pepful speil, if we cut out useless

thankful, go about it with a grin, like a flivver with a tank full ot
the John I), brand of gin; put some vim in every motion, earn
your pie in honest sweal, and discard the foolish notion thai you
earn more than you gel. Once we said, "When Huns are beaten
we'll begin to put up hay," but the locusts they have eaten golden
months we've thrown away; .we've been grumbling, talking,
spieling, charging that our neighbors'sinned, and the country hit
the ceiling as a eonseiucnee of wind. Now we've had our eostl.
shindy, handed out our bitter dope, let us work and be less windv,
if we talk let's talk nf hope. Statesmen all will do their stilting

busy working man. Normalcy will doubt and falter, she will
loiter in her tracks, till we cease to.fool and palter and ge! down
