"Tho condition of Jacksonville's fire
fighting apparatus, as shown by the
stato fire marshal's report, an extract
from which appears on the first page
of thlB paper, gives tho average citizen
food for thought," says the Jackson
ville Jost. "Plainly spcuking, at the
present moment wo have absolutely
no moans of combatting a fire. Tho:
report explicitly ntatos that tho city's
engines are In an unworkable condl
tlon; that tho supply of flro hose Is
Insufficient and useloss and great,
atross is laid on the fact that there Is
no organised flro department. The
one crumb of comfort In tho situation
lies in tho acknowledgement that our,
water supply and pressure Is perfectly,
adequate to moot any possible emer
gency. Tho flro marshal's report was
consldorud at llio city council mooting
. held Tuesday ovouing and in all prob
ability a volunteer fire company will
bo organized, and flro fighting equip
ment overhauled and put in good con
