Tho Southern Pacific railroad In Its
latest crop report has the following to
say of the Hogue River Valley outlook:
"Nearly all of the available acreage
of cultivated land in the Roguo River
valley has now been planted. There
was not as much grain sown as usual,
which was on nccount of the heavy
rains last fall, ground being too wet to
work. Considerable amount of acre
age that had formerly been sown to
grain has now been planted to alfalfa.
Since ljist September there lias been

Ground Is full of moisture, sufficient
to mature tho crops without any more
main. Apples and pears are doing
well. There have been four frosts,

not discourage writing stories in your
spnre time and submitting them.
The urge to write is nothing new,
and It Is never a sure sign of literary
talent. Everyone nt some time or oth
er feels the desire for self expression.
It may come out in acting, in painting
or In playing the piano, but because
the tools of the writer are always nl
hand it most often results In maiden
efforts of poems, short stories, novels
or plays. , . ,
Language seems easy to handle, be
cause It is a medium familiar to every
one, but to shape it in the form of i
good story or play generally requires
special tools in bands that are expert
through long training.. Embryo poets
and authors, with no knowledge of
prosody or story construction, get bnek
enough rejection slips to paper a room
nnd then give up trying. The me
chanics of a play are something not
easily mastered by a novice. The nov
el is long and tedious work,' with a
technique of its own.
Tho screen story, on . the other
bnnd, though It demands just as much
originality nnd careful thought as the
play or novel, calls for no special
knowledge of any literary craft. Pro
vided yoti have a good original idea,
that cuu be expanded Into a logical
and Interesting screen story, you can
write the synopsis' of a scenario, and
a synopsis Is all It is necessary to sub
mit. , By a logical story I mean one
that does not make villains die of
heart, failure just as they are about
to kill the hero or bad men suddenly
reform into saints for the purposes of
the plot, nd nn interesting story is
one with p. centra! Idea, strong enough
to bold the attention of n general au
dience rather than one made up from

be used in scenarios, and one of the
advantages of the moving picture is
that It can give expression to these
many thoughts that would otherwise
never be expressed. We can't all be
little Daisy Ashfords, Interesting the
world In stories written at the age of
nine, but anyone from nine to eighty
hft.-s Ideas somewhat similar to those
of Daisy, so anyone can do lis she did
write frankly and use imagination.
Sometimes t lie result will ha a suc
cessful scenario.
So my advice to you Is to keep on
trying. Don't be discouraged by re
jections nt first. You will be finding
out through them what is best to sub
mit. And don't give up any job nt all
to devote all your time to writing until
you lind out what you can do. It you
aro successful In getting enough ac
ceptances of what you .write in your
spnro time you will probably have
plenty of chances to take up writing
for the, screen ns u profession.
