a hospital hero late yesterday after a
surgical operation due to a cancerous
growth. He was a prominent Y. M. C.
A. worker, founder of the Industrial

NEW YORK, April 23. The stock
market was fairly active and Irregu
larly strong during today's brief ses
sion. Bails of the higher type extend
ed yeslerdny's moderate gains, uiidei'
lead of Pacifies, grangers and coalers.
Great Northern. Northern Pacific,
St. Paul preferred and Reading were
the chief features. In the later deal
ings there was also a sudden demand
for I'nion Pacific.
Oils were less conspicuous hut high
er in the main, Mexican Petroleum
rising two points and Standard Oil of
New Jersey four points. Food special
ties also were favored but steels,
equipments and the usual miscellaii
eaus issues showed little of their re
cent activity. The closing was strong.
