IT IS TO 1SK IIOl'KU that every person or firm manufacturing any
thing in the Rouu Kiver valley will make an exhibit in the Cham
ber of Commerce building in Medford, April 25 to 30. That week is
".Made-in-Oregon' week, and it's up to the manufacturers in this
valley, from Grants Pass to the California line to show tho people
in Portland and other cities that there are just as good products made
here in many lines as anywhere else. Don't say "let George do it
but arrange for space at once and show "Jackson county can do it."
Another reason this exhibition should be a comprehensive one is
to get the buyers acquainted with the local products and cultivate the
habit of buying "made in the Kogue Jiiver Valley products."
This cannot be done unless .the manufacturers co-operate with
dealers, ami this exhibition offers a splendid opportunity for .such
co-operation.

Al'TKIt a visiti tu Curlyh; n i'nnioiis man once remarked "There is
.sueli n tiling as too niui.'li brain, anil when there is too niueh it
sours the milk of human kindness. Carlyle is a gwut man, but he
would be trrealcr if his brain was a little smaller or his heart a little
larger. If a man thinks too much he feels too little. Chelsea House
lacks nothing in wisdom, but the wisdom wotdd be more creative if
there were more warmth and less heat."
J'erhaps that is Ihe trouble with II. L. Mencken whose second se
ries of "Prejudices" has recently been published- Mr. Mencken is
generally regarded as the foremost critic of American letters, with a
phenomenal brain equipment, lint after perusing his latest fulmina
tion, onu is convinced that his cardiac region is something nature
woidd abhor.
Mencken hates everything, including himself. 'Above all he de
tests his country, the constitution, the founding fathers, "members of
the Drama League, and the V. M. 0. A. weepers at the Chaulaucua,
wearers of badges, 100 per cent patriots, children of God; while
American culture ho damns and double-damns, as n maudlin brain
less cycle of "the moving picture, the phonograph, the New Thought
and the Jiiclorido tablet."
licing a disciple in early youth of Xeitzsche, he detests pity, grati
tude, affection, unselfishness, good faith, patriotism, the ten com
mandments, Christianity, everything in short that "abject and stupid
herd" occassional' reverence. All men repel him' while the only ex
planation he can offer for the "offensive practice of marriage" is
that to nearly every man there falls a moment when some woman who
disgusts him rather less than do all the others, comes within his range.
St. John Krvine, tho British literary authority names Mencken as
one of "the lights of American criticism.',' This may be true, but if
so, bis "light" is one that blinds and dazzles, a light with burning
heat, but without warmth.
For the essential weakness in Mencken is he doesn't tell the truth.
He is the Polyanna of Pessimism. He looks through a glass that
makes things worse than they are,' just as Polyanna looked through
a glass that made things belter than they are. . But for boredom
Mencken offers an effective antidote. And perhaps after all, in his
realm of literature, this is his justification.

OBLIGATIONS-
W1IHN my old cow was lying ill, my neighbor, Chester White
came from his collage on Ihe hill, and watched through
out the night. Ho placed a poultice on her brow, and hushed her
anguished groans, and helped to save that valued cow, which
cost me forty bones. And when (he long sad night was done, its
hours of sorrow spent, and 1 produced my roll of mon, he wotdd
not take a cent. "Nay, nay," he said, "we neighbors are,' as
neighbors long we'vj! stood, and talk of pay, would only mar the
joy of doing good." And 1 admired him as ho went, and said,
"lie beats two bands, the man who would not take a cent for
lending helping hands!" And he restored Ihe healthy faith I
knew when was young; my faith in man had grown a wraith, so
often IM been stung. But now ho comes to get my plow, my
grindstone and my spade, reminding me that my old cow had died
but for his aid. lie borrows everything 1 have, my stove and rub
ber plant, my hitlers and my beeswax salve, my washtub and mr
aunt. And now 1 don't allow a gent to work and draw no pav;
though he has only earned a cent, he takes that cent awav. 'if
some one helps me crank my Ford, or get the butter churned.
I take him where my coin is stored, and pay him what he's earned.

The manufacturer of your automobile recommends, in
the Instruction Book for your car, that the crankcase be
drained out and flushed and then refilled with fresh oil at
regular intervals. t
This is necessary because engine operation causes a
steady accumulation of road dust, carbon, fine metal par
ticles and other impurities in the crankcase oil. This gritty
oil circulates through your engine, impairs its performance
and ultimately leads to rapid depreciation and repairs.
But cleaning the crankcase is a job generally disliked
and neglected.
To meet this need, Modern Crankcase Cleaning Service
has been established by first-class garages and other deal
ers co-operating with the Standard Oil Company. These
garages and dealers use Calol Flushing Oil, the scien
tific agent that cleano out old oil, dirt, grit and other
impuritiea, and Aoes not impair the lubricating efficiency
of fresh oil used. The cleaned crankcase is refilled with the
correct grade of Zerolene.
' Look for the garage or dealer displaying the sign shown
below it means "Better operation and longer engine life."
