Carroll is a native of Georgia ami
wrote to his brother, living at Coving
ton, near the alleged murder farm,
for details. The letter states that the
negroes of that vicinity had for some
time been gambling in the woods, and
he believes the murders were commit
ted by the negroes themselves and the
blame placed on Williams by a trumped-up
confession of a negro farmhand.
